How to make sure all your studio equipment is well grounded......

From what I remember I thought they were running Google/Wide Orbit automation. It is sort of nostalgic to see those carts.

I was more shocked to see an Ariane Sequel in the rack, considering they're in mono and a very "unique" sonic signature on-air.

Ariane has a dual mono setting ,too. Great agc leveler. These pics are interesting.Wonder how the GFI's worked..station has an outstanding reputation..

WLNG has been in stereo for a few years now. They are a tremendous asset to their community and their dedication showed as they continued to broadcast vital information despite their own perils. They were back on the air the next morning according to their Facebook page.

What brand did the green carts?... ???

Ooops... copy/paste the whole line on a browser...

@oldiesstation: I have an analog Ariane I never saw the setting mentioned in the manual so it must be specific to the Sequel. As far as the GFI's go, you're assuming there are GFIs installed. I don't know if they would have been required by code, but considering the station's proximity to the water it probably would be well advised.

I've been listening to LNG since the early 70's and it motivated my desire to work in broadcasting as it w2as always a fun listen.

@Fieldtech1: I usually catch the station in the car and with the illumination of the display out I never noticed the stereo in the car. Mono or stereo I've always enjoyed them.

@SFM-Ptgal: I had those carts at the first station I started at in my teens. I want to say they're Fidelipac but I might be wrong. We had green, gray and yellow carts but they may have made red ones, too.

Mode
The fi rst decision you need to make is which operating mode to use. The Ariane Sequel has three modes: Stereo, Matrix
and Dual Mono. Each mode has its own capabilities and purposes.
Stereo
In the Stereo mode, the Sequel is a traditional Left/Right two channel AGC, with a single set of adjustments for both channels.
The two channels’ dynamic operation can be set such that control of both channels is coupled together completely,
allowed to operate independently, or with a user-defi ned amount of inter-channel control coupling.
Matrix
In Matrix mode, the audio is converted before processing to a Left-plus-Right or ‘mono sum’ signal, and a corresponding Leftminus-
Right or ‘difference’ signal. Matrix mode allows for stereo enhancement and optimization for any stereo broadcast medium
(such as stereo FM, AM or Television) that ultimately is transmitted in sum and difference. There are separate controls for the sum
and difference signals. After processing, the Sequel’s matrix signals are re-converted to Left and Right stereo audio for output.
Dual Mono
The Dual Mono mode allows you to operate the Ariane Sequel as two independent mono multiband processors, with unique
controls for each of the two channels.

Mono Operation
Because it does its processing in a L+R/L-R matrix, the Ariane is ideal for programming that must
provide mono-compatibility. But the Ariane can also be used in a mono-only environment, such as in an
AM or TV station that provides only monaural programming.
For use in a strictly mono environment, the L-R circuitry is unnecessary. Since sending audio only to the
Left or Right input would put equal energy into the L+R and L-R processing sections, this must be
avoided. There are two simple ways to avoid this:
1) Parallel the Left and Right inputs by sending mono source audio to a “Y” cable with two male
XLRs, which are plugged in to the Ariane’s Left and Right inputs as normal. You must adjust the
front panel Left and Right input controls to be identical. Or…
2) Plug a dummy (no wires connected) 1/4” phone plug all the way into the L-R pre-processing insert
jack on the rear panel. This interrupts any L-R signal, and only L+R can get to the processing.
Properly operating mono-only, all three of the L-R bands’ metering LEDs will stay red, at the ±0 dB
(reference) gain level. All other details in this manual that pertain to L+R setup will also pertain to a
Mono setup.THIS IS HOW TO DO MONO WITH THE ARIANE ANALOG YOU HAVE.
