How to start own radio station online

Hi All

Have been giving this some serious thought lately and wanted to throw the question out there. How would one go about starting their own online station? I know there are several ways, based on what I see when I google this question, but thought I'd briefly check in with any experts in the field that might exist via this site. Couldn't hurt :)

Thanks!

J

There are several versions of your question, and we are not sure which one you want answered.

The first one is technical: What equipment do I need and where do I plug the Gozinatas because I don't understand the Kumzoutas.

Another question is money? What will is cost me to start my own on-line "station" and can I expect it to generate any cash?

To me a big question that I never see addressed: How will I go about gathering, finding, creating an audience. It is easy to figure out the mechanics of how to pump audio into the Internet. Does the Internet ever get the tummy-ache because too many of us are pumping content in that nobody even knows is there so they don't take any of it out and listen to it? If you don't have vision of this final question, dealing with the first two may be a bit of an academic parlor game.

It's real easy to get all wrapped up in debating mp3 vs AAC+ and other formats. All of that is wasted if you don't have a plan to locate and secure listeners. And almost NEVER see that discussed in these forums.

"Build it and they will come" only works in the movies.

This should probably be moved to the Internet/webcasting board. But the problem isn't finding an audience. That's made pretty easy through social media. The problem is how do you monetize that audience. Unlike terrestrial radio the more people who listen the more bandwidth you need the more that station will cost you.

I stream my station via Live365. You won't make money because of the music fees for internet radio. I use the Live 365 Pro package and spend over $200 a month on streaming.

As a previous poster said, this is a question better suited for the "Webcasting/Internet Streaming" board - where threads with answers to some of your questions may exist.

As for my station, I've been using LoudCity, and since I go way back with them, I still pay a grandfathered low monthly rate, which is cool. Yes, it's a talk station, but I am drawn toward their streaming methods, and plus it also covers me as far as royalties (songs heard in production pieces) is concerned...
