How would a classic country station do in Louisville?

I think a classic country station would do well in Louisville. It would be run by a non-corporate entity. Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, George Jones, loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Statler brothers, Dolly Parton, etc.

A small little country station that DID NOT play faith Hill or Clint Black.

Hank Williams jr. AND Sr.

Forget about Louisville. They have it made on the dial there. Lexington is what we should be concerned about!

Actually Classic Country happened a couple of time in Lex. WAXU (1580) returned in 1990 as a SMN Real Country affiliate. However, the owners wanted a ratings miracle and pulled the format before it had a chance. And I believe 102.5 tried Classic Country for a short time.

The problem with Classic Country is the whole older demo curse as you try to convince a 25 year old female media buyer that it is a viable buy.

104.3 in greater Louisville ran with it a few years ago...seems it got a 2 share or maybe a little higher. That was in addition to whatever WAVG hung onto during that time. In any case, there are under 3 shares available for that format in Louisville. At least there were a few years ago. Like Oldies, the clock is ticking on Classic Country. With Cumulus coming to town to take control of WAVG, it's a real possibility that Louisville will lose it's only Classic Country outlet.

Probably would have gotten higher ratings if Radio One had of done things like promote it, and put more than one jock on it, and fed the format. You know, things you normally do with a radio station? Instead of cultivating the format, Radio One pulled it and put a simulcast of another dying format, WLRS.

Louisville had Classic Country on 790 before morphing to talk; they reappeared in the ratings but did better with talk. 98.9 was doing SMN's Real Country as the first version of KJ Country and had some numbers. The format moved to 1080 and disappeared much like all of the formats that has been on the frequency since 1979.

I believe it was from 1999-2003 when Clear Channel returned the Classic Country format to Louisville. It was on 93.1 FM called "93.1 the Bull."

I guess I'd forgotten how many Classic Country attempts have been made. But at the end of the day, only WAVG has stuck with the format for more than a year or two...

I, too, would like to see a classic country format...FM or AM. It would have to be in the right market to be financially viable. When we bought WXAM AM-1430 (formerly WLCB-AM Hodgenville), it had long been country and in later years became 'classic country', but I'm not sure the Hodgenville 'market' supported that, or any format any longer on AM. WKMO FM had a much stronger presence. Prior management sold it to Commonwealth and after a few weeks became an ESPN affiliate.

I would think there is still an adequate number of older country fans pouring money into the local (Louisville) economy to warrant such a station, but I don't think there are enough suits who would be willling to take that gamble, what with WAMZ reigning in the 'ville.

I VT'd middays on The Bull for a few months.  We had absolutely no promotions budget.  We didn't even have a station van!  I did one remote during the time I was there.  Luckily, at the time of my remote, QMF had just gotten a new station vehicle and the old van was about to get Fox logos all over it, but they hadn't finished the job yet...so it was just a solid black van.  I took that van to my remote and taped a "Bull" banner to each side of it.

In the last ratings WAVG-AM got a 0.4 in the 12 plus numbers.

WAVG sounded like crap. When it was time for a spot break and they didn't have spots to run they filled the break with a song. So, sandwiched between Merle and Willie you'd hear Carrie Underwood or Faith Hill. Many if not all of the local spots sounded awful. Off mic voices and a tons of echo.
