How would you change the networks' sports departments?

What would you do with the networks' sports departments if you had the chance?

I would do two things, and these with CBS:

--Bring back the College Football Report title of the 80s (but just the title, not Prudential's sponsorship) for today's current SEC broadcasts under GEICO. After all, if Jim Nantz/Don Robertson could recite that College Football Report title for four big seasons from 1985-89 under Prudential Financial, I think that Tim Brando could do it at least as well under GEICO.

--Bring back the studio design that CBS had from 1981-90, especially for The NFL Today.

This might be difficult under current co-ownership, but I'd like to see ABC Sports return as its own unique (and strong) brand. No more of this "ESPN on ABC" junk.

I'd also like to see MLB and the NBA return to NBC.

How 'bout Wide World of Sports being brought back?

Here's what I'd do.....

NBC & CBS SPORTS NETWORKS

Broadcast & distribute live events like ESPN does (On cable in some areas & on OTA in others)

ESPN

Stop being so damned greedy
Make ESPN Goal Line available to everyone or work with NFL Network for distribution via NFL RedZone channel

FOX Sports

Stablize the MLB On FOX studio show crew so it's not like a revolving door of crew members every year
Replace Tim McCarver with someone else (Even if it's from MLB Network)

That's all I can think of. Anything else (Including a dismissal of Joe Buck on FOX & Phil Simms on CBS) would be merely cosmetic IMO.....

Cheers & 73 ;D

Those are all good points there! One more thing I'd do: I'd bring back the NBA on CBS. ABC/ESPN just don't cut it (TNT is great though).

"There's not a lot of properties available to us," says NBC Sports Network programming president Jon Miller.

Still, they can do certain things that might be interesting, like sports-themed game shows or...*gasp* international sports events. It worked for FSC to a certain extent with the EPL. Maybe NBCSN can air more rugby or CBSSN can use the influence of their parent to air SEC college football that aren't the marquee matches. Like a Missouri vs. Miss St game, for example. The SEC already expanded to 14 teams, with a chance of going up to 16 teams in the near future. There's certainly more than enough games and ESPN can't possibly air all of the rest. I can't fathom why CBS hasn't done that by now.

NHL Network/NBATV Live Games with it's own crews.
MLB Network more then one night with it's own Crews.
Sunday Night Baseball Game on ABC.
TBS for Baseball Playoffs don't steal a person from another network only if their contract has in it says like John Smoltz TBS/MLB Network/FSN South.

Place the ENTIRE Stanley Cup on network TV, not just a part of it.

Please have ABC reestablish their OWN sports division, like it was in the pre-Disney era.

Get rid of Joe Buck on FOX Sports. He is downright awful. No more idiotic robots and fluff. Also, stop using the NFL On FOX for every sport they cover.

I agree that the NBA was better on CBS.

Other than bringing to broadcast TV sports which were never seen before WWOS was a programming nightmare. Not only did they severely truncate all manner of contests due to time constraints they also tended to pair events like dirt track racing with figure skating thereby wasting half the show for the majority of males. Their emphasis upon boring winter sports like ski jumping was also deflating. Unfortunately, since it was one of the only national sports shows on TV in those days you had to sit through half the show to see the interesting half.

Sports Jeopardy,Millionare,Family Feud,Lingo and so on.
MLB Coast to Coast on Tuesday's on ESPN.
NBC Sports Talk show from like 9am to 3pm Live like Sportscenter.
NBA Fan Night Crew calling that Game Live.

You are getting that wish. The Stanley Cup Finals series will all be on NBC.

edit: whoops, spoke too soon. Looks like games 3 and 4 are cable. nhl.com had every game set to air on NBC on their webpage last week.

As far as I'm concerned nobody could touch NBC when it came
to baseball; I, too, would like to see it return to its rightful home.

I'd also like to see ABC re-establish its own sports department and,
for openers, go after the Olympics. Problem is, so many of ABC's
biggest sports names (Howard Cosell, Jim McKay, Chris Schenkel,
Don Meredith) are gone, and I don't know who could replace them.

Keep the NCAA basketball tournament on CBS, and keep CBS the leader
in golf coverage. Although I like Johnny Miller's refusal to kowtow to any
golfer, CBS has the better overall crew. And I don't understand why ABC
got out of golf, and at the height of Tigermania at that.

Where the NBA and NHL go, I couldn't care less. I'm not a fan of either.

I'll stick to the 4 major sports:

NFL: Probably needs the least amount of 'fixing'. I'd kill the NFL Network, and weekly Thursday games...go back to 'special edition' games, once a month, one on each of the broadcast partners.

MLB: I'd kill the TBS Sunday afternoon package, and, to be different, I'd have NBC Sports Network get Sunday night games.
ESPN could have the afternoon games, maybe farmed out to 'ESPN on ABC'...if this can be done for the NBA, it can be done for baseball.
Whoever covers the game really needs to stop the 'NY/Boston/Philly and maybe Chicago and St. Louis' obsession. This is what contributed to hockey's 'niche sport' reputation. Baseball is still 'big' enough that it hasn't been marginalized to the extent of other sports.

NHL: NBC needs to think beyond the 12:30 or 1 ET window for its Sunday games. They've expanded their NBCSN schedule, which helps.
NBA: I might care if they ever get rid of David Stern. Going back to NBC would be preferable.

ESPN has Golf.
Give March Madness to ESPN have more people to call the Games.

True, ESPN has golf but the potential audience on ABC is bigger. Then again,
with Tiger playing mostly so-so golf now, the sport isn't attracting the audiences
it did a few years ago (which is a shame because there are so many good young
up-and-comers out there) so maybe it really doesn't matter if ABC gets back into
the sport or not.

Another thing: not only would the College Football Report title be brought back for the studio show, it would extend to gamebreaks (try this on for size: see if Verne Lundquist could say Liberty Mutual College Football Report Update). The reason why I say this is that in the days of Jim Nantz, the College Football Report was not only the name of the studio show, but was also used for in-game updates.

CBS should lose its overly shrill CFB theme song. Doesn't sound "collegian" enough.

OTOH the Eye's CBB theme continues to kick ***, as did its 1983-1990 NBA theme.
