How would you program WWBA?

Since they are not going to spend the money for local programming and you were now the new GM what would you do;

My idea:

6:00 to 9:00 Mancow (look I’m saving them Larsen’s salary)
9:00 to 12:00 Boortz
12:00 to 3:00 Smerconish
3:00 to 6:00 Randi Rhodes
6:00 to whenever: Who cares

As my friend Paul Gonzales used to say… What do YOU think?

Here's how MsMusicRadio would program it:

6:00 - 9:00 AM - Marvelous Marvin
9:00 AM - 12 Noon - Marvelous Marvin
12 noon - 3:00 PM - Marvelous Marvin
3:00 - 7:00 PM - Marvelous Marvin
7:00 PM - 12 Midnight - Best of Marvelous Marvin
12 Midnight - 5:00 AM - Marvelous Marvin (voicetracked)

I like your idea's MichaelCrose. Gold star to you! I agree wall-to-wall syndication is the best option for 820 WWBA, even during morning drive. After many years of trying to attract ratings and not moving the listenership numbers, Mark Larsen is going nowhere fast, except another swingers ski vacation to the Italian Alps. 860 WGUL is kicking up more fresh powder with Bob Bennett.

Mancow, Boortz and Smerconish are only marginal national players, but undoubtedly they could be cleared in the Tampa Bay market by the end of next week. You do not run a culture shock liberal like Randi Rhodes during a conservative-ish news/talk line-up. Instead, tape delay Laura Ingraham 3-6 because you've already got her, and like it or not, she's got more name recognition than the other three put together.

You could turn loose Tom Leykus 6-9 and there are a few other nighttime offerings that might be interesting - or you could repeat the "biggies" from earlier dayparts. So, now that we've cut ties with local gabber's Larsen and York, what do you do with 820's local news department? I shall leave that consultation for another thread, but y'all can pull on the yarn now.

Smerconish is already on WWBA. You would probably have to get Salem to release Boortz to put him back on WWBA. They have him buried in the middle of the night. Salem would be smart to ditch the Salem programming and put Boortz on live. He is now on live on flea power 1220 in Sarasota now, but probably the signal doesnt go much past Bradenton. I still think Larsen is good. But, he is a great midday guy. He has a tough row to hoe up against 970's morning program, and the morning programs of a lot of the FM's which are all talk anymore. But I doubt he would work middays any more.

I was a HUGE Boortz fan, and was sad to see him taken off Genesis because I thought he was one of the smarter and most fun conservative radio hosts out there...but the ratings were non-existent. And the reason the ratings were nowhere to be found was because Neal stopped trying YEARS ago, and the show became:

"The Fair Tax is great because..."
"Lets take a caller on the Fair Tax..."
"My plane..."
"I love Naples because...."
"I went to dinner in Buckhead last night..."
"Hey Royal, hey belinda..."
**or worst of all**
"This is Herman Cain..sittin' in fo' Unca Neal!"

Let him rot at night until he decides he wants to WORK in radio again.

Hmmm... Boortz sounds like a one-trick pony, never heard one of them on 820.

And FYI, DttJ... I painfully recall Marvelous Marvin's underwhelming stint on Tampa's Top Talker.... still, No!

OK Dan, I will go with you on the Boortz thing, but who would you put in his place (No local all off the bird.) The show must be live.

Oh and Laura Ingraham would not be my choice in the afternoons for two reasons (oK maybe three) 1. It would not be live. 2. Her and Schnitt do the very same show. 3. Randi is the anti-schnitt and would stur things up.

So how do you explain WDBO in Orlando, where he and Clark Howard crush 540 and El Rushbo?

WDBO has Central Florida heritage, consistent programming and a competent local news staff, that's how. Tough to beat no matter what slop they feed the pigs.

As in carry his syndicated show? I'm not sure if you're aware, but his show was cancelled a few months ago. He's now being paid by CBS to sit home and kill wine and cigars for the next two years.

I now humble myself and admit the errors of my threads...

DttJ may be right, Tom Leykus is canceled, so he won't be signing up with 820 WWBA, I got it. Didn't know, didn't care because he really sucked anyway.

SBE1 notes that Smerconish is already on 820. No kidding, sorry I didn't spell that out in my writings. I should have made the obvious much clearer for you.

Before anybody else catches it and takes me to task, 860 WGUL airs the Bill Bennett morning show, his brother Bob is a Washington D.C. lawyer.

O.K. I stand self-corrected. Haven't you learned not to believe everything you read and only half of what you see.

WHY NOT FORGET TALK AND BRING BACK THE OLD WGUL FORMAT. I CAN'T REALLY BELIEVE THAT THIS AREA CAN'T SUPPORT THIS FORMAT. I USED TO LIKE IT. A GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO WDUV.

Oh, I like this thread!

6 to 10: Mark Larsen!!! (AM Tampa Bay will eventually die off, leaving Mark to rule the mornings, Tedd Webb needs to be put out to pasture anyway, I'm tired of listening to all the excess phlegm gargling in his throat when he talks, and Jack is beyond senile)

10 to 12: Neil Rogers (haha, that'd be a gas)

12 to 3: Alex Jones (yes really)

3 to 6: Bring back Dan York (push local calls and topics, with minimal national garbage)

6 to 9: Michael Savage (who else???)

9 to 12: Mark Beiro or Dan Ruth (or Mark Beiro AND Dan Ruth)

12 to 6: MOYL with short news breaks near the top and bottom

It'll never happen, but if it did, I'd never turn my damn radio off!

I think the problem with talk radio today is that the lineups aren't schizophrenic enough. If you ran a irate conservative host right into a far left program (or vice versa, especially LOCAL) it would instantly generate listeners and calls like we haven't seen since the 80's heyday. And in that case... selling it would be cake, dude. Think outside the box, my friends. Talk radio has never been about uniform politics, it's all about entertainment and the theater of the mind...

Clear Channel's WJNO 1290, West Palm, has Rush, Sean Hannity (3-6 pm) and Randi Rhodes (6-9 pm), so there are some Florida stations that do a mix of conservative and liberal talkers.

...one can only dream!

Reality just in... Jack's senility and Tedd's snot pulled a 9 share in the new PPM.

Randi Rhodes started out at WJNO as a local host, so her inclusion in that lineup is about her local audience more than her politics.

The crazy part is that I actually do have dreams about WWBA's programming decisions. Of course, they usually turn violent shortly before I wake up.

But yes, back to reality. I'm still scratching my head over the continued success of AM Tampa Bay. While I don't deny the numbers, they only continue to support my opinion that Arbitron is essentially a scam, PPM or not.

Regarding WJNO, there are a few other CC stations that mix it up like that. I love it. Because if you want to talk about something that's really hard to sell, it's not my fantasy lineup, it's the syndicated dreck on these conservative talk stations already. Hey, where's Kabrich? heh

Cedric -- you are funny, and possibly right about butting conflicting viewpoints stirring up the pot. It certainly works during a show, why not during dayparts? I think that's what's wrong with talk radio today -- it's become support-group radio and guys like Lassiter who used to challenge your mind are far, far , far and few between.
