Howard playing music?

The news media reported that Howard Stern played a couple of songs. One was from Tom Petty(Last DJ) and another one was from Sheryl Crow(don't know the title)

I didn't recall Howard playing music when he was on WXRK(syndicated to other markets). I figured he would strictly be talk.

So what's the deal?<P ID="signature">______________

He had technical difficulities at first and since they had no commercials they needed to take a break to go pee or get some food so hence the music.

He's been playing music because there are very limited commercials and the Gang needs a bathroom break once in a while. The show is 5 hours long with only 6 minutes of commercials an hour. At K-Rock there were 20 minutes worth of commercials each hour..... so there was no need for music.

However Howard is not playing very much music at Sirius. Just a few songs per show and much of the time he doesn't even play the songs all the way thru. He just plays them for as long as is needed to conduct his business off air.

Robin is complaining that she doesn't even have time to prepare the News. Translation: There is a lot more actual "SHOW" now..... which is a great thing for the listener.

Its a great thing for the listener if they have the material to fill the time. Sounds like they are struggling a bit with it so far

on thursday they didn't have time to even discuss technical issues so they did it on the air. howard & fred had a conversation about how to handle the commercial breaks, to put howard's live spots in between pre-recorded ones as they did at K-ROCK and to come out of the spots with a song or two that howard will interrupt when the show is ready....or something like that.

Way back in the day, when Stern was on in the afternoon at K-Rock, when he first started, he was supposed to play 6 songs an hour. He barley averaged 3, but when he did, it brought up some great material.

When they gave him the Police to play, he stopped it, said it was crap and "not rock-n-roll" (which is funny bacause of how he would kiss Sting's ass later on), and told Fred to break out some Zeppelin.

It was on one if these "rock-n-roll jags" that he asked Fred, "hey do we have any Mountain?", then leading to Leslie West on the show. It also led to an appearance by Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult (Alison's cousin, I think) on the show, and Stern then appearing on BOC's Club Ninja record (un-credited).
