Howard Stern going local...

No, I have no news.... BUT, Scott Greenstein sells off 6 million shares and only has 1.3m shares left. How do you think negotiations with Howard are going? That does not inspire confidence. Okay, so let's say he leaves SiriusXM. Goes back to traditional broadcast. Dallas was a great market for the show. What station? How great would it be to have Howard, Musers and others battle it out?

It has everything to do with who the syndicator would be. If it is CBS, then look out Jagger. If it is Clear Channel/Premiere then KDGE is likely.

I am not convinced that Howard is leaving Sirius though, even with Scott's stock sale, which would very likely tangle him in an insider trading investigation.

I really doubt CC would canabalize 97.1 by putting Howard on opposite Russ. Most likely would be to have howard on 97.1 mornings and move Russ to PM drive.

Good point. I bet that's exactly what would happen.

Doubt he'll go to terrestrial & deal with the FCC limitations. Also doubt terrestrial can pay what he wants or even consider a morning drive show that's live for only 2 or 3 days a week.

These negotiations always go to to the last hour & he's always saying the show's over. I don't get how he's working too hard at 4 days a week, and it seems like the show is always in a re-run week. Since Artie's suicide attempt (he was never replaced) the show has been in a holding pattern. I'd guess he'll probably stay with satellite with a reduced salary & more re-runs.

I like the show but probably wouldn't listen to him on terrestrial with all of the censorship & endless commercial breaks. It was almost ridiculous at the end of his Infinity days before satellite. It was the audio equivalent of Swiss cheese.

Good points, all, but here is some food for thought:

Only a few players could make it work: CBS, CC, Cumulus (they will have more stations soon), Emmis, Citadel...of those, only CC and Citadel have a syndication arm (for now). If CC wanted to, they could roll out a real Howard Stern Network across all major markets. If they did that via Premiere, it would match up well with Elvis between AM/ PM, flip flop them either way buy with a national footprint and go local in Mids and at night. I don't think they would care about small potatoes like Russ in that case. Bigger picture... they could pay Howard some serious money to do that. As far as the FCC goes, Howard has always needed an enemy, the FCC is perfect in that role and we all knows that he CAN work under those circumstances when he needs to.

Another thought, Robin has been pining away for a show and this could be Premiere's version of a "two fer" (it's not even Tuesday, radio people).

The commercial break problem had more to do with the affiliate (KYNG/KLLI) than Howard. With the show taped and replayed during local hours, 105.3 had no problem packing 20+ spots in on EVERY single break...making Howard's show "appear" to last until 11:30 each morning. (Strange that the show wrapped up around 10AM when it was on KEGL.) I could never listen to Howard on 105.3 because of that...no patience to keep tuning in and out, trying to dodge the commercial marathons to catch 5 or 10 precious minutes of Howard in between.

Nah, I can't see terrestrial radio paying 'Howard Money' to anyone, unless maybe he converted to serious conservative talk! The days of shock jocks are obviously long over, so it's a very risky proposition to "assume" that Howard will still be hot 15 years after his peak. I never got to listen to Howard over Sirius, but I know the last couple of years on terrestrial radio, it was like a daily rehash of him running for governor, and other things he did 10-15 years earlier. Where's the new material? Where's that cutting-edge stuff? And will an audience today take a 50-something's musings as pop culture gospel, or just the whinings of a aging and out-of-touch old man?

And whether he would admit it or not, the show took a major hit when Jackie left. Even Billy West was a major loss. Artie, Cabbie, etc...spares.

Since going Sat', Stern has all but disappeared from the national media scene. Ten years ago, while nationally syndicated, Stern was a lightning rod as his show weedled and waddled around the FCC and local station PR acrobatics. Now? He's practically disappeared except for the miniscule numbers of subscribers he's getting out-of-control money to entertain.

Satellite radio has been a black hole. The attraction and allure rest in tip-toeing around the government while doing free radio with a good bit..........thus, on a local scale, things like the Little Ticket.

Sat radio doesn't have the money to pay him these gobs anymore. His best medium is national syndy walking the narrow line. He's gonna need to re-generate the ad money of years past somehow in today's economy and go back to doing what he does best.........agitating along the fringe while keeping an FCC license to broadcast.

That's his niche. He's knows it but the Sat/money deal trumped all a few years back. It's not funny or entertaining to hear F-bombs or porn staight-out over the radio. It's a blast to hear someone talk about the same things but doing so on a trip-wire of accepted guidelines and appreciable repercussions......

Stern's return would be in a PPM world, he left in a diary world. Do you think his 'Friday's off' schedule will work in a PPM world?

Not a chance. But, if you listen to his channels on Sirius, he has proven his ability to cobble together a talented lineup. I listen to Riley Martin, the guy is a whack job but, he is entertaining. The Bonus Show works for me as well. An all guy talk line up, call it HOWARD, with Howard doing a mid day shift...just an idea. Ferrall at night, Greg Fitzsimmons filling in, local talent in the morning and afternoon... Tell me why this wouldn't work.

Maybe because most people don't know they are? ::)

Don, I don't think that is true. Ferral has been around for a long time, burned most bridges in broadcast, but I would put him and his show up against any sports talker here. The problem with Talk is that it takes personalities a longer time to develop a following. I believe Stern would be welcomed back. I also think anyone he endorsed would be welcomed as well. I think it would be interesting to have you political talk delivered by a stutterer, porn stars doing an entertainment show. If Pugs, Kelly and that gaggle of spares, Gordon, Newy, Russ, Arnie Spanier, Corby, Greggo, Rocco, Bad Radio, Kevin McCarthy, Humble Billy... My point is, not knowing someone is not a valid reason for why a show wouldn't work. Rhyner was spinnin records on The Zoo, NOT a recognizable figure until the little Ticket got traction.

What I meant was, that most people (ie, not in the radio business) know who they are. I have never heard of them and I listen to radio quite a bit, both local and satellite.

How about two words: RE TIRE!

he's made his money and if he was smart he invested it wisely.

He also has a hot wife who has her own causes to promote as well. As everyone has noted, his time as passed. it wsa good in the begining and he broke the barriers. Now its time to play "elder statesman" and live a friutfull live with plenty of money and a hot wife and can do anything he wants.
