Howard Stern: How The Mighty Has Fallen

The Los Angeles Times has an article on Stern's apparent fall from fame, and decreased audience, since jumping to satellite radio in 2006.

"Where once Stern routinely commanded a parade of Hollywood's hottest stars -- George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Julia Roberts -- today publicists are left to tout studio appearances by the likes of Chevy Chase, Joan Rivers or Hulk Hogan."

Radio-Info's own Tom Taylor is quoted in the article:
"There's a sense talking to the people who know him that he is aware that he's isolated. But he knew this would happen."

Makes sense. With him on satellite, he can't really piss anyone off anymore which was half the fun of the show (though he seems to think that people cared much more than they actually did).

Ach, who cares what a newspaper says about emerging media? Aren't they losing readers? Yeap, hence the article about a 'once popular media star'-which has produced a lot of traffic for the LATIMES , I'm sure.

And who would be these "people who know him"? I would love to be a fly on the wall for those discussions.

...and a Los Angeles paper commenting on a New York City icon -- yeah, that's worth about two dead flies...

They ran that article here in Charleston SC too. I guess it was picked up by the A.P.

What are the chances 'somebody' convinces Howard to go back and do 3 hours in the am on FM radio and then do another hour or two uncensored on SIRIUS? Push the sales of the sat receivers a bit mo..'

'..for those of you that subscribe to SIRIUS, in the uncensored 9am hour of our show all the ---- we wanna do but cant on terrestrial radio, so tune in.'

you know, hard economic times...maybe he needs to make a few extra bucks for the holidays. hes married now, wifey needs things...

>> Who's banking $500,000,000 dollars... you? <<

This tired argument is always trotted out whenever someone dares criticize Stern, Limbaugh, Oprah, Springer or any other of the endless parade of pinheads who discovered a way to stoke the Great Unwashed and their love of the cult of personality.

So, by this argument, I guess our big heroes should be the guys from enron, Wamu, Lehman Brothers ...

Scoreboard ain't everything. He can have the cash. I'm glad I'm not him.

I've always hated howard stern he is not funny or interesting and he makes fun of people who are better than him... so he has no credibility on anything he says.

Maybe people are just realizing all that and the interviews with porn stars and other non interesting people is getting old so less people are tuning in.

Did you just write pinheads? Watch the Oreiley factor much?
And did you just compare Stern's financial success with that of the CEOs that have helped put us in this financial crisis?
I've got news for ya - it's not oprah nor Howard Stern who you should be blaming for this country's misfortunes. They're entertainers who have built up a huge fanbase over the years. oprah and Stern havent let their fans base, and they sure havent let this country down. The same cant be said for Lehman Brothers or Enron.

howard stern is better at radio than you. and me. admit it. get over it. move on. no one likes a jealous hater.

Stern is VERY talented and engaging. If you've ever heard him do the news, (it used to be at the end of the show) his riffs and comments are spot-on. Similarly, the stuff he did in the first hour used to be quite intelligent, funny, and smart.

But his bread and butter, the stuff he put on during the 7 to 9 am slot, was smutty, sleazy, and stupid. To me, that lost him all credibility.

The mighty have fallen? Are you insane?

Stern has more listeners than ALL other channels combined on XM and Sirius (remember when Arbitron did a Satellite estimate last year or so?)

Here is the problem with the LA Times article.

1. Tribune is run by a bunch of the old Clear Channel nitwits, right? Tribune owns the LA Times and Tribune is bidding on the CBS stations that they are selling. CONFLICT OF INTEREST HERE!
2. This is FRONT PAGE NEWS? Yes, if you are smearing the satellite radio industry and it's only star. We are in an election year, a war and the worst financial market ever...THIS is front page?
3. Howard's numbers are unknown. When he was on FM, they claimed 18-million listeners. Now it was 12 million. When Artie Lange's book is #1 and he sells out theaters, it's because of the show.
4. A no name comedian was on a few weeks ago, he was the #1 most searched word on Google that day....#1!!! How does that happen if no one is listening?
5. Advertisers are staying on and paying good money...if they aren't getting results, why stay on?
6. Several comedians claim that their shows are packed when they plug them on Stern...and not just in NY!
7. The LA Times should be ashamed of themselves...THEY are the ones becoming more and more irrelevant! They have lost over 150K subscribers.

No one can argue what Stern has done for radio. There are so many copy cats out there making a living because of him. If he wasn't the king, why is there no national morning show with the numbers he had? Who can be #1 in NY, LA and Philly at the same time? (not to mention all of the other markets where he was highly ranked)

If he did come back to FM, which would never make sense, he would show everyone how fast he would be #1 again.

That's my 2 cents....F JACKIE.

Expect a bidding war when Stern's contract is up - a return to syndicated radio is a real possibility, and I think if that were to happen, his audience would be as big as it ever was before the switch to Satrad.

Not gonna happen-unless there's a sea change in the FCC's policy, and the US Code.

I'll repeat -

Every time the Stern topic comes up, there are always the defenders who ask the detractors: "How much do YOU make?" This is SO boring and so off-topic. If only those radio guys who can match his salary can criticize Stern, then I guess he can do no wrong. So I made $12 million last year - guess I can't say anything.

Puh-leeze.

Stern is a polarizing figure, whether he makes a buck or a billion. I'm not a hater - I'm a "don't care if he lives or dies" - er. What he does has zero affect on me personally and vice versa.

I will say he's a flippin' phoney. He made his rep on lesbians/hookers/the retarded and the mouth-breathers who like him really believe that's Stern's life. It's all hokum.

And yes, I feel like I'm pretty lucky.
