Howard Stern in Memphis

This topic has surfaced in many other cities' boards. They say that many of the Stern affiliates rating's drop significantly after his show is over. It has even caused many of Howard's affiliates to flip formats. I've never thought of Memphis to be a huge market for Stern. How does the Howard Stern show do in M-Town?

EG, you beat me to it. Stern has consistently been a bottom feeder in this market. Some say signal problems, I say he just doesn't play well here.

When Stern was on the Today show recently, it was said that he has the #1 show in most of the markets where he is heard. I guess Memphis is a major exception to this rule.

I wonder if Howard is #1 in most of the markets he's in, or if he's just #1 for his target demo in the markets he's in. Or if it's just something Howard made up?

If you go back and look at the ratings for WXRK, he did a 2.5 most of the year. And the year before that. Just stating the facts.

Assuming for the sake of discussion your post is not going to be deleted for posting ARB numbers against board rules, those numbers mean nothing unless (A) That's Memphis you posted and (B) the other young male oriented morning shows did worse. The 12+ summer numbers for MFS don't look too stellar, but that's all I have access to anymore.

Nobody's bashing Howie here, we're just saying he's not working in THIS market.

Which begs the question, is Stern the master promoter or has/is Infinity covering Stern's azzz? Point being, is Stern REALLY the king of all media or has he simply been a master at projecting that image?

Frankly, while elements of his show are funny, I think Stern sucks and HAS since way, WAY back in the 80s when the east coast arguements used to revolve around who was better, Stern or Imus? Well... when both were at WNBC, Imus won HANDS DOWN. (Probably wouldn't today since Imus sounds like he's doing his show from a nursing home, IMHO). Nonetheless, such statements are subjective and probably say nothing of Stern's actual performance nationwide... but the fact that Stern's ratings on his flagship station suck big time speak louder than his proclamation as king...

Sirius *might* be in for a disappointment in their investment. :) <P ID="signature">______________

Re: Howard Stern

Love him or hate him, you really cant deny his sucess in this industry. Here is an article from 2000 showing WXRK (K-Rock) as the #2 billing station in the country.

I promise you that status wasn't gained from their alternative rock format they have during the remainder of the day. That's why K-Rock will be changing formats in January after Howard leaves. Also included are Stern affilaites KLSX in LA and WBCN in Boston.
