Howard Stern Signs Five-Year Extension with SiriusXM

It's simple to do the math. Subscribing to SiriusXM with the added charge of getting Howard Stern is about $12 a month. Some people get it for less, if they threaten to disconnect, but I think that's a small percentage. So should we say it averages to $11 a month? $11 x 12 months = $131 a year.

Now should we say that about 3 million people subscribe to SiriusXM mainly for Howard? $131 x 3,000,000 subscribers = $393 million a year that Stern brings in. Yes, there are the other costs of Sirius' many channels, satellites and administration, not just Howard's salary and that of his staff.. But let's just say for now Howard brings in $393 million a year.

Bloomberg News says Howard is getting $120 million over a five year contract. That's $24 million a year.

You can see, even with a spectacular income, Howard brings in a TON more money than he costs. It isn't even close. Even if Stern is only bringing in 2 million unique subscribers and the rest would stay even if Stern departs, that's still $131 x 2,000,000 = $262 million a year. That's more than 10 times Stern's salary.

TTalkradio1 says Stern is overpaid? I'd say Stern is a BARGAIN to SiriusXM.

By the way, Stern's current deal is that he does 111 shows a year. So he's on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for 37 weeks each year. (Actually, he takes off three Mondays a year, MLK Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day, so he's on 38 weeks a year, if you count the weeks he's only on Tuesday and Wednesday.)

Each show is about 3 1/2 hours, 7 a.m. to around 10:30 a.m. He probably will keep those hours in the new contract, although I don't think he addressed whether he's keeping the same schedule. And he no longer sits through commercial breaks. He doesn't play commercials anymore. Since the Pandemic, his live shows have no recorded spots and only one live mention, two or three sentences about the "Sponsor of the Day." The spots run the rest of the day on Howard 100 and 101, but not during the live show.

Howard works 3 days a week. Joe Rogan got more views on Youtube than a video of Howard asking Paul about the breakup of the Beatles. Howard is done.

Howard maintains a significant portion of the Sirius/XM subscriber base, and is worth every cent of the contract cost to them.

Satellite radio is not about ratings. it's about subscribers. Stern brings in millions of them, and the company finds it is worth it to keep him on the air.

Sirius/XM makes no money off YouTube videos.

The people paying the money have done the math and they disagree:

What’s Howard Stern Worth To SiriusXM? ‘A Small Fortune,’ Says Billboard. | Story | insideradio.com

He doesn't get paid an hourly wage. He gets paid a percentage of what his subscribers bring to Sirius.

The day he retires, the value of the company will drop. There is no replacement, as CBS found in 2006.
The same will happen when Rush cashes in.

iHeart will have more problems than before.

There is NO replacement for either Howard or Rush.

Rush has plenty of replacements begging for his time slot. I don't think Sirius will replace Howard.
