This lame rumor was started by John Hogan, CEO of Clear Channel Radio, who was quoted as saying he might be interested in signing Howard. And then Howard, the smart business person he is, ran with it for publicity.

The likelihood of Hogan hiring Stern is slim to none. Remember when Hogan axed Stern from CC stations? And think how many heritage morning shows Clear Channel has recently cut. Then there's this indecency thing with Hogan; Stern would make him really crazy.

There's just no way this is going to happen.

I just had a thought: Bubba the Love Sponge is another host CC cut along with Stern over indecency issues. Recently, while both Stern and Bubba have made their way to satellite, Bubba has also resurfaced on Cox radio stations. I'm starting to connect the dots... though I don't think Stern would settle for doing an afternoon radio show for Bubba's terrestrial affiliates...

I grew up listing to the Greaseman in Jax. I still remember his first time on the air at WAPE. They had a great promotion going where they invited people to audition over the phone for the job and Greaseman came in pretending to be a truck driver. It was pretty funny.

But what made him work then was that he was truly one of the first shock jock, talking about sex and bodily functions before anybody else. Stuff that was still considered taboo in radio. But he used funny language that kept him from being viewed as vulgar even though people knew exactly what he was talking about. But people were still shocked by what he was talking about.

And I think what happened is that in the 80s, so many shock jocks came out and the language got raunchier and the topics got raunchier to the point that when Greaseman was in Atlanta, there was nothing shocking or taboo about it anymore. It just kind of became silly bits. When he returned to Jax, I think it was kind of the same thing.

I enjoyed him though. He is one of my all-time favorites.

Agree completely as to your last sentence on post #22.

The "lame rumor" was carried as a news item on radio-info.com.
