Howard Stern trashes another Providence DJ - Audio available here.

Going through more of my old radio archives. This time Howard dukes it out on the air with someone from WPRO. I'm posting this stuff as I find it. I know I've been posting a lot of Stern. But that's because that is what I'm finding right now. If I come across Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly trashing someone in Providence radio I'll post that too. Now grab some popcorn and listen to the link below.

Really? In what way. Stern seemed to be right on. Newberry kept claiming that using the name Bababooey was a slip up. But I remember Newberry's show. He kept using the nickname Bababooey all the time. So how is that a slip up? I don't see how Newbury scored anything on that exchange. I can't wait to hear what others think.

Howard was being Howard. He was saying what his listeners would expect him to say. He was performing. Bruce was responding and he did it effortlessly and professionally and came out the winner. To say Bruce is stealing from Howard because of "bababooey" is ridiculous. It's a case of Howard becoming a parody of himself, and I'm not taking anything away from him.

OK no offense, but I now think there is a very good possibility that you are Newberry. Are you going to tell me with a straight face that Howard doesn't mean anything that he says. That he just caters to his listeners by saying whatever he thinks they want to hear? Do you honestly believe that is what that whole phone call was about? Howard putting on an act? LOL... Really? Because you can take it back at any time once you realize how silly that sounds. ;D

Keep in mind that we are talking about a man who has built his whole career on being brutally "Honest". Stern is the one guy who is Not putting on an act. That is the whole appeal of his show! He is being himself. However the guy stealing bits and pieces of Howard's show is the guy you should confront about "ACTING". Don't you think?

I'm well aware of what Howard does and respect him for it, but any entertainer knows what his audience expects and gives it to them. I don't doubt that when it comes to important issues he speaks his mind. When it comes to putting on a show about less important things, he says what Howard is expected to say. Bruce and Howard are in no way similar on the air and weren't similar when Bruce did a regular talk show so there's no comparison. I can name my left nut "bababooey". It doesn't mean I'm stealing it from Howard and isn't even important enough to rant about. If Bruce were doing a Howard type show, then that would be another matter. End of story. Agree to disagree. You exhaust me and I'm not Bruce.

You are absolutely correct when you say Howard and Bruce are not similar on the air, that much I can agree on. Is Bruce even on the radio anymore? I seriously have no idea. In any event, when a guy starts calling his producer Bababooey it sure makes him sound unoriginal. That was Howard's whole point. Bruce isn't like Howard and you even admitted yourself that they are in no way similar. So why call your producer Babbabooey if you don't want to be like Howard? Is it really that diffcult to create your own goofy name for your producer? If it was a one time thing, than I agree it wouldn't be an issue. But Bruce used to do it all the time when I listened. It wasn't just a one time thing. If he is still on the radio these days, I sure hope that he is thinking up stuff on his own now. I have nothing against the guy. But comon... BABABOOEY? That's not a word you even want leaving your lips if you are trying to have a seperate identity from Howard Stern.

newbury definitely held his own as well as anyone could going up against given the circumstances. I'm sure it a classic situation of a hundredmore things he could have said to prove his point after he listened to it back. Point Newbury.

i think the big question here is who was the Southern NE radio fanatic who obviously had too much time on his hands that sent the tape to howard? and does he post here?

I'm pretty sure that it was me.

I didn't send Howard the Paul and Al tape though... LOL. Seriously.... I've got thousands of tapes all digitized. All kinds of material ever since I was a little kid. Both radio and TV. It's all been uploaded onto servers in different parts of the country. This place could burn down or get wiped out by a Tornado. My files will still exist. All I have to do is download them again. Easy peasy. :)

It's Newbury

Thanks. I found out that he now has a weekend food show on WHJJ. That sounds tasty. He's probably a real nice guy. I just hate hearing unoriginal things on the radio. It bothers me more than it should. Maybe I should increase my medication. Anyway... My point is, It's the reason so many people say radio today is stale. Not much in the way of creativity anymore. I think that's sad. Not quite as sad as how much time I spend on this board, but sad nonetheless.

Actually, his show is on WSKO (AM 790) on Saturday's at noon. It's bounced around a bit in the past year from WSKO to WHJJ and back.

He also has a Sunday AM show that covers wine. Not sure if WSKO carries it, but it's on WXLM in New London.

How does Howard get his big head through the studio door ? For somebody who is so big, he spent a lot of time worrying about a little guy who might be copying him.

The guy is on the Radio for 5 hours a day. If you are familiar with Howard you already know that he talks about EVERYTHING. The entire phone call lasted less than 10 minutes. That certainly doesn't seem like a "Lot of time".

The fact is that in radio you don't even acknowledge this stuff unless you're the underdog, which Howard isn't. Much ado about nothing, but then you're the one who sent it to him.

Yeah and Howard is the one who chose to acknowledge it and talk about it. That was his choice. Either way, I've got a better excuse. I have no life. It only took 10 minutes to copy the tape and drop it in a mailbox anyway. Besides...the date on the tape is December 1st 1994. So it's not even like it was anything I did recently. So just relax.

Well according to your theory Newbury must be an underdog, because I also have a tape of him talking about this whole thing on his radio show too!

From what I recall, Bruce said on his show "You will never guess who I got a call from today? I got a call from the Stern people. They want to talk to me on the air tomorrow about using the nickname Bababooey. So I'll be talking to them in the morning and I'll give you my thoughts on everything tomorow afternoon and let you know how that went".

However a funny thing happpened. After the conversation with Stern, Bruce never mentioned the whole Bababooey thing ever again. Even though he specificallly said he would. He stopped calling his producer Babbabooey too. So draw your own conclusion. My personal conclusion is that Bruce wasn't happpy at all about how the phone call went. So he walked away from the whole situation with his tail between his legs.

Who cares though? It's not even important. This was 16 years ago. I happpened to find the tape this week and thought it would be an interesting piece of history to post. I wasn't planning on a big debate about it. It was kind of silly then and it's REAL SILLY NOW.
