Howard's shorter commercial breaks

It's great. Back when Howard was at K-ROCK I would use to 20 minute commercial breaks to make breakfast and do other crap. Now with the shorter breaks I have to run back to the radio. Howard sounds like he has more energy. Giving us more product. Keep it up.

You do realize that this is not his (Howard's)own choosing. Advertisers are not going to spend to only reach about 10% of his old audience. If the subs go up, so will his ads. Time will only tell if that will happen.

Nope. Since Howard announced his move to Sirius in 2004, he said there would be the shorter 2-3 minute breaks. It has never been a secret (just like Fridays off) and if you didn't know, you haven't been paying attention. Music programming on Sirius has always been commercial-free, however.

Well then, podner, I guess you're right I haven't been paying attention. However, I think its wrong to have commercials on pay for radio. Just my humble opinion.

Is it wrong, then, to have commercials on basic cable or satellite tv?

Howard and O&A both have "sponsors" who are basically paying to help offset their salaries. Are they long and intrusive like before? No. I know with XM & O&A that a chunk of the "commercials" are XM self promotion and not so much "sponsors". But also, with Howard's huge salary, you seriously didn't expect SIRIUS to pay $500 million on pop up ads, did ya?

BUT, as much as I don't like the ads whatsoever, to paraphrase Opie when he answered his listening critics...while we are sitting here for 4-5 hours a day, when do you expect us to go to the bathroom, eat, do periodical prep sessions, etc etc etc. Would you have an issue if you show up for work and you weren't allowed to get out of your set for 4-5 hours? You are supposed to sit there and pee your pants?

Yes! If HBO or TMC interrupted a feature that I was watching for a commercial, I would be dropping them and renting the DVD.

music channels are commercial free. all talk channels have commercials.

A movie is different, in that it isn't live action. Anyone that's ever done any kind of stint in radio knows how hard it would be to remain in the same seat for 5-6 hours with no break. If you were watching, say, "Gettysburg", I'm willing to bet you'd hit the pause on your DVR a few times.

I personally don't mind the commercials; they give me a chance to check out some of the other stations in the lineup. My only complaint is that since the sponsors are so few at this time, we get the same 4-5 ads every half hour. I dunno how many tomatovine.com ads I can stomach.

I specified "basic" subscription. as in ESPN, CNN, etc. You pay and they still give you commercials.
