Howie Carr affiliates: contractually obligated...

SaveWRKO.com's Brian Maloney:

"With Howie Carr having quit the program, the big question is why his former affiliates haven't yet dumped it.
One programmer who was kind enough to explain her station's position is WXTK General Manager Allison Makkay, who told me by phone two weeks ago that contractual obligations are a key reason. As long as "The Howie Carr Show" continues to exist, even sans Howie, it must be carried through their agreement's end date. Makkay also indicated they had not begun to look for a replacement program as of that point."

Did they have a lawyer even sneeze at the "contractual obligations" before entering into them? Could "The Howie Carr Show" continue on WRKO indefinitely for this reason?

WRKO makes next to nothing on the Howie Carr network, it was largely a vanity play to appease Howie. If anything, it is a nuisance as good radio was often ground to a halt when the bumper music would play so they could get to break and stay on the clock.

The Howie Carr Show hosted by Todd Feinberg offers an easy option for stations that don't want to invest in their own talent. I suppose the fact that it is at least regional, if not local, gives it a leg up on some syndication.

Same source was telling everyone that Bill O'Reilly was losing Westwood One as his syndicator for the Radio Factor.
Riiiiiight....

Well he did cite someone at WXTK at a source, at least...
note of course that Cary Pahigian, Howie's agent, is associated with that station, too.

Who knows...will we still hear Todd on "The Howie Carr Show" 3 years from now?

Well then they should set the affiliates free...of those contractual obligations. But Entercom wants people
to think the Howie IS coming back, so what would THAT tell people? WCRN DID get out of the obligation
somehow though...

At some point they will have to make a change. "Todd in for Howie" is getting old fast.

Cary Pahigian was laughed out of Boston and went to hide on the Cape on WXTK :(. I am saddened to hear the Howie has anything to do with Pahigian...if it is true

WCRN in Worcester replaced Howie the week he wanted to start at 96.9 WTKK before the courts stopped the move. I think it would be quite a stretch that their "contract" to carry the show just happened to coincide with that particular week. So I think it is more likely the remaining affiliates just haven't made a decision yet on what to do with the PMD slot rather than contractual obligations.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. Note that the station Maloney talked to has a Pahigian connection
so maybe they were told to use the "contractual obligations" bit.
WRKO got WCRN to join the Howie network in part to help out at times when the signal fades to
the west after dark, and then the Red Sox Network got WCRN as well...
