Howie Carr Hinting At Replacing Jay Severin On WTKK?

In a Heslamage titled "Host of options for WTKK after Jay Severin," she received a comment from WRKO's Howie Carr: "I wish Jay the best, and I’m always looking for new opportunities to upgrade my position." Hmmm...

Well, I guess that depends on if you consider taking a half-mil paycut an 'upgrade.' The conventional wisdom appears to be that GM was looking for a way out of Severin's contract. They are still going to have to pay Jay, if you'll pardon the pun, a hefty Severince. I'm not sure they'll be looking to replace Jay's million with a Howie million.

Of course, you have to take a lot of what Howie says with a grain of salt. He's never going to forgive Wolfe and Kahn for outsmarting him.

Regards,
TSB

Here we go with another installment of Radio for Dummies.

Greater Media isn't interested in Howie at Howie's old negotiated price. Times have changed.

Howie can't even talk with them until next year.

Next year is an eternity in radio.

Howie is trying mightily to keep his name in the mix publicly, lest he become an irrelevancy as he continues to toil away at a station which has been in a headfirst dive into the toilet since the day they took the name RKO General off the front door.

This is Howie's spin, intended to keep his name alive as a talk radio superstar. It has nothing to do with who does PM drive at WTTK.

Will TKK still be talk by Sep of 12...?

btw I remember when he tried to jump in '07. He did an interview with Ch 4 saying he was looking forward to working mornings at his new station. I heard Graham and Severin hinting that they would soon be getting a new co-worker and saying "drive my Carr" or something. WTKK's website was re-designed and a page was ready for Howie (even a domain name of howiecarr969.com or something) and candy bars, Carr Bars, were ready for giveaway (Howie gave them away later at public appearances). Even after it was known he couldn't jump, he would wear a WTKK hat at such appearances.

I also noted Maloney's comments. On the Web he has ignored Boston radio on radioequalizer blog;
I think he talked of Beck leaving his daily Fox show but nothing on Severin. SaveWRKO hasn't been updated since 4/26/10 though he did renew the domain name and he runs ads. I started my own message board for his regulars (link is at howiecarr.info)

Ch 4 last night said Jay's agent/lawyer stressed he will still be paid what's owed him, and he "did nothing wrong"

After Carr returned to RKO Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth said he was no longer interested in Carr. Who knows what his motivation for saying that was but I have always found him to be very sincere.

Lets assume for a second that TKK finds an acceptable afternoon host and they move to a lighter talk format are they going to disrupt that to make way for Carr? They seem to be happy with E&B in the morning.

If they were really interested in waiting for Carr, I would move Graham to the afternoon in the short term and use Bower from 10a-2pm.

BTW, Am I the only one who enjoys Bower's show?

Absolutely not. I was a HUGE fan when he was on Sirius...and it is pretty incredible that he is on a local talk station now. I like his show. He keeps things light and injects some humor in the topics. I really enjoy his show.

Jay's agent/lawyer stressed he will still be paid what's owed him,

Notice he didn't say the complete value of his contract. I would expect Jay to "still be paid." I would assume there was a settlement and Jay will walk away only a percentage of what the contract called for. It was in both parties interest to avoid a suit.

"did nothing wrong"
The Co that employed him wanted him gone forthwith. They probably think he did something wrong.

Am I the only one who enjoys Bower's show?

I think he's a good host -- he has a decent radio voice, takes a lot of calls and lets the callers have their say.

But his topics leave a lot of be desired.

As you mentioned, I think he'd be better in mid-morning than PM drive.

The "did nothing wrong" nonsense ought to be punctured.

You may not diddle your employees. There is a presumption that the boss is in a position of power. He said that he did it "because I could." Why is it that he could? It's because he was in a position of power. If you think that every woman who got a job with his company immediately plotted to bed him, then you're spending waaaaay too much time reading Penthouse forum.

I feel most sorry for the women because they had to look at him. Translation: yes, this guy was in a position of power, that's the only reason it happened. It wasn't his Adonis like looks or sparkling personality that got him the women.

On the other side of the coin, he gets fired for admitting something done long ago while a former president skated by getting a blankety blank from an intern. So I could see why he thought there was nothing wrong with admitting it on the radio.

This is a perfect explanation of why Jay was fired. I think Jay is creepy and does not represent his neo-con fellowship well.

Bingo, as a card carrying Libertarian, Jay who loves to portray himself as one does NOT represent me or my views, as a conservative or Libertarian.

He had said on previous shows that he bagged women in his employ.

I hope the statute of limitations was up.

One thing I learned early on is you do not take a dump where you eat.

I don't know who he thinks he was going to impress by admitting he was a slime ball.

Now that being said was it probable cause for GM to can him? Are their "standards" that tight? After Tom Doyle used the words "chicken schick" (schick as in razor) as a punchline today and having Julie jump right in and clarify that the word was not one of THE seven, the standards can't be all that tight imho.

I think Jay is creepy

Pretty hard to take issue with that.

and does not represent his neo-con fellowship well.

Huh? Severin a neo-con? When did this happen?

TSB

WTKK has a lot of competition with talk. In addition to WRKO, it has to compete with WBUR and WGBH for listeners who like talk radio . A suggested format would be Top-40. This would cost them less (Top 40 personalities verses talk personalities) and give them more listeners than the talk format.

A possibility. But I think either Kiss or Jam'n would have them for lunch were there any missteps.

Jay suggested we nuke Iraq when Bush first started his push for war. That's a neocon point of view. I've also heard him describe himself as a neoconservative.
