Howie, Sox, and WRKO

Once the Red Sox season starts most games will be 7 pm starts and it's said that the 6:30 pm pregames
would run on WEEI. But you have to wonder: WRKO could have Howie run till 6:30 pm and then have the
pregame show on 680 (the other affiliates on the Howie network could run "best of" segments for that last
half hour).

Or:
--Howie 2-6 pm IF they can get away with chopping off Rush's last half hour. Radio-Equalizer says though that among 25-54, Rush's audience in Boston has doubled, so between that fact and a "must carry all 3 hours
of Rush" stipulation, maybe that won't happen. But if they could pull it off, make Howie 2-6 and have the
first hour be local talk. (Then again, other Howie affiliates in MA like WHYN, WEIM, and WXTK might not be able to carry it, unless they carried that hour tape delayed at 6 pm) Then from 6-7 pm WRKO could do an hour
long Sox pregame (have a half hour of sports talk if need be, while WEEI runs their instant replay...)

Then again some Sox games start at 7:30, 8, or 8:30 pm, but most do start at 7. Since WRKO seems
to be running promos about carrying the Sox every 15 minutes, and they're convinced it could be a big
moneymaker, adding Sox content starting at 6:30 or even 6 pm could be a smart move. And a slogan
change to "Sox and Talk" or something similar...

even the deplorable howie carr would be a better listen than Rush. Once in awhile Howie has a guest that is worth tuning in for; Rush is just one big radio void. You either listen to it or you avoid it.

I don't listen to Rush too much...you wonder if Howie could have sometime filled in for Rush (and then had
someone fill in for Howie) and Howie's national profile could have been expanded, perhaps creating true
nationwide interest in his show. But not only does Howie not do that but he made fun of Rush for the
oxy stuff, etc. So I'd doubt Rush would be interested in having Howie do a fill in for him now!

I of course don't think Howie's deplorable, but you do have to wonder if 'RKO might try to put him on 2-6
and then do Sox stuff. The money is out there. For the same reason, every Pats game has had a "Fifth
Quarter" either on 38 or 4, and it does pretty well in the ratings...the Pats make money for CBS in this
respect and the Sox can make money for Entercom (a star-crossed corporation lately)

All of this speculation could be rendered meaningless (maybe it's meaningless anyway) if CCU (or its new owner if the deal goes through) flips 1200 to English-language non-progressive talk after the 50 kw buildout...and considering the realively mild snow-free-so-far winter, may be sooner that previously advertised.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE HOWIE CAR SHOW

This is Entercom's not so gentle nudge to howie carr that the exit door is fast approaching this guy who in his late 50's is over the hill. As he once said its "father time" catching up.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out and don't look for fox tv to bail you out howie. you have the perfect face... for radio and a newspaper column. Better start composing another book from your old newspaper columns.

so Rumba could be short lived... (they could keep it on 1430)...?
If CC were to keep control of the station (suppose deal collapses) you could see Premiere shows like
Beck, Rush, or Drudge or even maybe some Fox Sports Radio (pulled from WEEI):

6-9 local talk or syndie Bob & Tom
9-noon Beck
12-3 Rush
3-6 local or syndie host
6 pm on syndie talk or Fox Sports...?
Coast to Coast overnight

or maybe even some libtalkers from Jones or AAR mixed in...?

Howie has said a number of times he can't wait to get out of the here and move to Florida. I'm not so sure he'd be all that upset if he was ousted.

Well be aware that he still has one or two of his younger daughters "in school" and maybe he wouldn't
want to pack up and leave just yet--though as he's said, he could always be like Rush (exc. for the Oxy
part) and do his show from Florida. Doesn't Entercom own a station down there from which he could
do the show? Though it would be tough to cover stuff for his column unless he did a lot of phone calls
and online checking for stuff, etc.

As for the being ousted part I could see Greater Media signing him OR maybe he could do a WEEKLY
national show for the likes of Westwood One, Premiere, etc.

Everything I've seen/heard seems to indicate that the Spanish tropical format will live on at 1200 AM once the upgrade is complete. It's 1430 that will be flipped to something else.

Entercom used to have some more attractive properties in Florida, but now they're down to just two stations in Gainesville; however, one of them is an FM news/talker.

yes I think WRKO did some kind of simulcast after 9/11 or some kind of war coverage...with the Gainesville
station carrying some WRKO shows.

The pre and post-game segments will air on WRKO.

ah, OK--some sources earlier said WEEI would have them. It does make sense to have them on 'RKO
and in most cases Howie's last half hour (assuming he doesn't move to 2-6 pm) will be pre-empted
but WCRN and a few other stations do carry him (though they, too carry the Sox and may also wind
up having to carry the pre-game. Though I'm not sure--some stations may not necessarily have to
carry pre-game...)
