How's about blaming ARBITRON!

I mean come on! they call your house,,"Excuse me, would you like to do a radio survey? " " Why sure,, by the way, I have 5 other people living here with me." "Oh sure, no problem! We'll send you 6 books for everyone in the house!" So some wise ass gets 6 books. Fills them out as 6 different people. And radio stations PAY for this 'service'? This is the worst system I've ever heard of. And everybodies taking fits! Everybody CALM DOWN.!!! If Arbitron didn't have a system a 5 year old could mess with, maybe we wouldn't all be speculating it's the end of the world for WPRO , Depetro, radio, Rhode Island, or the U.S.A. Hide under the blankets and PANIC!!!!

Booooooooooooooooooooooooo

You are right. The system is archaic. It does suck. There is way to much room for error. Get a household with lazy people and they'll just write down anything. After I got my Neilsen book several years ago, I was ready to throw it out the window after day 3. I swore that I would never be a Neilsen family again. I just wanted to relax and watch Television. But every time I turned on the TV I had to do homework after I was done. It wasn't worth it to me at all. Never again. I think I would give Arbitron a try if I ever get the call just to see what that is like. But I can guarantee you that I'm done with Neilsen.

I got an Arbitron book about 15 years ago. There was no "call" then. They just mailed out diaries with 3 or 4 dollar bills in each one as long as you kept mailing them out.
The system is clearly a joke if a few diaries from one family can completely screw with the ranking of a market of over a million people.
Corwin has some balls crowing about the new results on TV. Not too long ago HJJ kicked PRO's butt. Now, outside of Helen Glover, they are getting stomped 4-1 by PRO. Anyone have an idea what they pay per year to pipe in Hannity or Glenn Beck? If they had to pay 4 locals $100,000 plus there is no way they could keep the lights on with those abysmall ratings.

Skynet - What market were you living in at the time? The top 56 TV markets and the national sample are all metered markets... so all you have to do is turn on your TV, and the equipment captures all of your viewing. The closest diary market to Providence is Springfield, Mass.

I was living in The Providence market, but the year was 1997. So I'm sure that is the reason why I had a diary. I don't know when the switch to a Metered market was made. But it was obviously after 1997.

I agree with the poster Bing. This thread hits the nail on the head.

I know people are saying that the PPM as flawed as it is will eliminate certain problems like this but what's to prevent someone with a PPM from just giving it to a "media affiliated" person to wear? Is there something in the system that would out this person?
