How's the new Alternative station doing?

CC must be happy w the debut. In the first week of the new format the station is 12th 18-34, better with Men and moved up three in rank among 25-54 from when it was WIld, not bad at all out of the box. 16th rank among adults in week 1 compares favorably to other "newer" stations, Game 28th, All News 23rd. Both River and Rock are down just a little bit from March probably due to folks checking out the new station. Sure CC hopes the re launch of GST is successful as well.

I like the station but give it alittle more time as we know. I like when they mix it up to all the 99-X and 92.9 Dave-FM and 98.9 The Bone.

Sometimes they repeats the same songs sometimes.

I like the station as well. Nice mix with a few repeats but honestly the variety is good and it's great hearing Aly on the radio again.
They were having weird technical issues this morning.. sounded like a digital encoder eating its tail.

As an indie/alternative fan, I have to say this is the best commercial station since 99X in the early nineties. I'm honestly surprised it exists!

It's an oasis in corporate radio in this town. and Aly is great.

Interesting to note that the "likes" for Radio 105.7 has now surpassed Power 96.1. I usually don't look at facebook "likes" but with a few minor exceptions, it would seem to me that Power attracts more younger folks and so I would expect more facebook likes from their page. Not to mention, Power has been around since last year and Radio 105.7 has been in play for only a month.

I don't listen to Power, but I have a feeling 105.7 engages with their audience more in social networking. I also suspect the fact that most alternative listeners I know are a decade older and most are avid social network users.

Even if I'm way off, the station is doing well. I like the music.

The only thing I don't like is something in their processing or digital uplink. Some tracks have a very "watery" midrange. Doesn't make me turn it off but I notice it at times.

If you flip back and forth between 105.7 and Star, there's a huge difference in sound quality - I'm guessing that they're waiting to see how large the audience is before spending too much money on the signal

I am not an engineer but just a quick check of the current RF spectrum in around ATL: Any improvement in 105.7 signal would be hard to do. WKLS 105.9 in Centre AL and WRXR Rossville GA and WROK Macon both on 105.5 would make it hard not taking into account the protection of 106.1 and WBZY both C1's. The audio processing quality should be "easy" to fix. The lack of RF signal very expensive and possibly impossible to fix. I sure CC has spent major engineering efforts on 105.7. The only option for signal improvement would be an "agreement" like 106.7 and 106.5 had. I do not know if the FCC will allow these anymore.

The problem is not with the signal, it sounds like it's being delivered or played back from compressed audio at limited bitrate. Sounds like "mpeg water". I remember hearing that to some degree on Dave FM as well but not to the same degree.

Yes, I have picky ears and I know it. Doesn't stop me from enjoying the station and the music, but I notice these things.

Interesting, I do not remember any complaints when they were CHR/Urban/Dance. CC had a microwave STL:

http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/license.jsp?licKey=990202&__newWindow=false

but there is a 4/01/12 expiration date. I doubt CC (or anyone else) would let a "free" STL go away to pay the phone or cable company every month. So I assume the FCC page was not updated. I don't know the set up on 105.7 but most modern processing boxes have presets. One can assume CC with hundreds of FM stations would have a good setup for 105.7 that just needs to downloaded and entered.

Wouldn't be the first station in the ATL to let their audio quality go to pot. Too much compression of dynamic range in pursuit of sheer loudness and "dial pop" and too many digital artifacts from low-quality sources and codecs seems to be the rule of the day.

With some songs affected more than others, I'd suspect it a combination but perhaps low quality source material being mostly the culprit. Interesting though, that if I switch over to River, they seem to be a bit louder, yet their sound is really good.

105.7's playlist, however, is very good.

Clearly, though, they were taking a risk in starting up this format, so I don't blame them for starting out more cheaply on audio quality - if ratings are good, I'm sure they'll improve the quality of the sound

I follow Radio 105.7 on Facebook, and your social networking theory may actually stand up. Even though it is mostly voicetracked, their social media presence shows that they are very locally focused. Whoever is running the social media accounts is doing a pretty good job of make the out of voice trackers lappear to be like true locals.

Mostly voicetracked? 11 hours of live, local radio ALONG WITH mostly live, by remote, DJs for the other 10 until they go into syndication. And IIRC, "Roche" is an old favorite from Buzz/105.3- so he is a "true local", just from Washington DC.

The is no excuse for CC the largest radio operator in the USA to have "cheap sounding audio". Audio is what radio does! There is no capital expense, just your engineer spending a couple of hours adjusting whatever system they have. Modern audio processing "boxes" are semi PC's and easily adjusted. If the 105.7 listeners really care about the station, they would email, call, tweet, or post on Facebook their dislike of the "sound".
