Hubbard Swoops In & Buys Sandusky!

Hubbard Broadcasting has purchased the 10 stations of Sandusky in the Seattle and Phoenix markets for $85.5 million as of today.

Most of the investment, of course, went to secure the legacy and heritage of "Lumberyard 1440" -- The Lamptimer -- KAZG.

These means that Hubbard paid well over $8500 per post through the years "The Arizona Goldmine" has been a runaway topic here on this board.

Hopefully, the notice on the parking structure door that states "No Weapons Beyond This Point" will stay as a preservation item, as will the collection of aged lamptimers through the years.

Hubbard has long been hugely successful, with the top billing station in the nation -- Washington's WTOP, as well as a myriad of stations starting with KSTP in Minneapolis / St. Paul and several other outstanding markets.

This adds two more Top 20 markets to the holdings.

What will Hubbard do with The Lamptimer -- Arizona's Goldmine?

More importantly, with Hubbard sharing the same values as LDS owned Bonneville, could it be the end of days for KUPD & KDKB?

Pure speculation alert!: Hubbard changes KDKB to all-news and simulcasts KDUS on 97.9, competing with TMISU on two fronts.

Contrary to what people think, TMISU don't give a rip about the music they play on their stations. They're solid broadcasters who know how to treat people well and make money. Former Bonneville head honcho Bruce Reece is Pres/CEO of Hubbard, but Ginny Hubbard Morris controls the company. Notice her maiden name.

It'll be interesting to see what Hubbard does with them.

Bet Hubbard puts 'em under one roof.

Well KAZG is certainly the crown jewel in this acquisition, but there's only sawdust coming from the rumor mill at Lumberyard 1440.

...so far!

That would be cool. And it would be good cost-effective business decision. :)

Highest price because it's Gumpdusky's highest on the dial Ancient Modulation station (Seattle included). And at 52 watts at night, Nurse Jeff and I can only imagine what the cost per watt multiple is on this deal. Holy smokes, we'll have to get the Old Gringo to crunch the numbers...too much for our feeble fezzes!

$85.5 million

Is it just me or does that number seem low for these stations? All their fm's in both markets seem to being doing well with a few doing really well. Didn't KKFR sell for somewhere in the $70 million range? I realize values have gone down but seems a little low when you compare the two sales.

8.5 mil per station. would they have sold each one seperately for that? i would guess No. But 85 million is temping

Yes, but values have plunged. Four full-signal FMs in Denver went for $19 million a few years back.

It's happened to TV, too. Gannett's paying $1.5 billion for all of Belo, but KTVK alone went for $310 million 14 years ago.

Here's hoping that if The Lamptimer's day are numbered -- that they end with just one more play of Ed Byrnes "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb" preceded by "Brown Eyed GirL"

I fear the last song to play could well be Psy's "Gangnum Style"...

I would hardly say that TMISU are "solid broadcasters that know how to treat people well", believe me. Additionally, it was only a little over a decade ago that KTAR was the #1 station and the top-notch news/talk station in the market. At this point they would be happy with placing in the top 10... or even the top 15 sometimes! The on-air product of both the sports station and news/talk has been on a steady decline and there's no sign of that changing anytime soon.

As to the speculation with regard to Hubbard, if history is any indicator, they will certainly do something to put their own stamp on the stations. I sincerely doubt we'll see anything overly dramatic because technically speaking Sandusky had the market cornered on rock stations and with a throw in sports-talk AM plus the legendary "lumber yard/lamptimer", I don't see many changes happening too soon. KDUS is locked into their standing as an NBC Sports Radio affiliate. KUPD and KSLX seem to be okay at the moment, although I wouldn't doubt that a few tweaks would be in the works.

The only real mystery is KDKB... A station that I could only best characterize as a middleground between KSLX and KUPD, a niche that I suppose doesn't really have a suitable alternative so I suppose they'll leave it alone. Nevertheless, this is radio so you can probably expect they'll do something completely stupid sooner or later.

I've worked for Bonneville.

Solid broadcasters who know how to treat people well is exactly how I'd describe them.

And I've worked for KTAR. Yeah, the numbers were good 10 years ago, but it was coming apart, especially in the demos. Whether you like what you hear on-air at KTAR-FM now is a matter of taste, but they're a much stronger station in the demo than they've been in a long time, and are positioned well to move forward.

As much as I loved being a talk rookie asked to join the All-Stars (Heywood, McMahon, Westmoreland, Lawrence, McCoy, Foster, Detour Dan), there's no way that approach, on AM or FM, would still be flying high today.

I am thinking some tweaks are in order for this cluster. I would like to see the following:

KUPD - Transition to a "Everything that rocks" which would include alternative titles

KSLX - Transition to "Everything that is classic" which would include classic alternative tracks

KDKB - Bye bye and make this frequency a sports/talk station using CBS sports

KSLX is #2 25-54. I wouldn't change a thing.
