Huckabee vs. Rush

So cumulus has announced that they are throwing Huck out there as an "alternative" to Rush. My question is will they be crazy enough to take him off of WABC? If they do...where does Rush land? WOR or does CC put up a talker?

Wow! Rush NOT on WABC? That would be an interesting scenario.

I'd put my money on WOR...and he would kick Huckabee's butt.

On the other hand, when is the end of the Rush era? An inevitability that happens to us all.

That era never started for me. All I know of his show is the parodies on Stewart and Colbert. I did hear him once blasting out a car at the next gas pump. He was calling John McCain a "communist". Guess Rush was speaking from all his years in communist captivity. Why are so many public figures who were service age during Viet Nam and avoided going so quick to jump on the patriotism of those who served.

That would be the best thing that could happen to WOR. Put Joan Hamburg on the AM subcarrier.

(Yes, I know there are no AM subcarriers)

More likely Huckabee lands on WOR and Rush stays where he is, no?

that would cost a pretty penny for Cumulus...and they are not in the habit of writing checks. Write a BIG check to WOR or put Huck on WABC and get local and national ad dollars. Sometimes the illusion of a financial success (and this would be all illusion as the numbers that Huck inherits will quickly disintegrate) outweighs common sense.

Well look KSFO the Cumulus O&O in San Francisco removed Rush on New Years Week and put
JD Hayworth there. KKSF 910 the CC O&O took Rush on New Years week along with Former WCBS-AM and KGO-AM host Gil Gross to go as a local Fill in for other ex KGO-AM hosts ( Gene Burns and Len Tillem).

I thought it was Premiere's (owned by Clear Channel) decision to take Rush's show to their station and off of KSFO. Premiere did the same thing in Boston. They took his show away from WRKO and onto a CC station.

Not to hijack the tread but, I agree. The real reason Obama got elected was the GOP ran a Vietnam Vet. If you want to be president, do not serve in the the military! Clinton (draft dodger) beats WW2 Bush. Stateside Air National Guard Bush beats Gore and Kerry (both in country Vietnam Vets). Obama beats McClain (Vietnam Vet.)

I will never forget the time I interviewed with a company (not radio) and the guy who was interviewing spent time in Canada avoiding the draft (I went to HS with his older sister). I know it sounds stupid, but I left the interview "sick".

Everyone seems to be assuming they'd run Huck live on WABC.

Also, I've been led to believe that Premiere charges barter plus cash for Rush. Right?

Is this simply a move to improve their negotiating position with Premiere?

Last question: How do potential Huck affiliates know he won't leave them high & dry if he feels like running for office again?

I don't think he's that type of person to just leave them "high and dry", but that is a very big commitment if a station was to jettison Rush in favor of Huckabee and he did not generate the revenue or, more importantly, the credibility and definition, they experienced with Rush.

No chance WABC jettisons Rush for a relatively untried Huckabee at this point, unless they want to not just shoot themselves in the foot but in the head.

Never say never, but most everybody on this board agree with you.

Rush is a unique personality who defined the AM dial 23 years ago. He continues to give stations a credibility and direction they would never have had.

Whether you like him or not, in most markets his is the "goto" station for news credibility. If it is a national story, he will be reporting on it with a take not heard any place else.

Imagine WABC without Rush. You can, when there are guest hosts. It isn't the same. WOR is where
he'd be if it weren't for WABC. WEMP would grab him in a "New York Minute", then NJ-101.5 would make sense.

I've tried to do the reverse. Imagine WCBS with Rush. I don't see him on WINS, it would be too sharp of a direction change.

So...WOR just announced Dave Ramsey is going 2-4. That means that if WOR is to take Huck then they would have to move Hamburg...and I think they make a pretty penny off her.

No way WABC is going to drop the number one talk host in NYC. But as they currently air Huckabee at 5:55AM with his daily message, I wonder how this going to play out.

Two thoughts about the possibility of Huckabee on WOR:

1. They haven't said yet what is going to fill Ramsay's slot in the evening. I think a radio talk show starting out from scratch looking for a clearance in the No. 1 market would like to get a clearance on WOR, even if it is tape delayed eight hours into the evening.
2. Another possibility: They drop Gallagher, move Joan to 10-noon and clear two hours of Huckabee from noon to 2.

Mike Huckabee is a name grabber. A previous poster said, "Never say never".

There are only two stations Huckabee would end up on, either WOR or WABC. New York is too big of a market not to have Huckabee on the air.

Did any NY station run Fred Thompson?

Good point...but Thompson was a WW1 product and didn't have any stations to force any cram-downs. Cumulus does...but will they? Or will they run him delayed to test him? Problem is that they would be bumping another Cumulus product (Batchelor or Levin) to do so.
