Huge Antenna in Hawaii

I remember the summer of 1991 going to Hawaii. I remember going on one of those tours. It seems like it was near Diamond Head like in a valley I remember a huge hill and it was some AF Base or somthing thewre was a hudge Antenna like an HF antenna it has a beam type directional. Maybe it was near Pear Harber but it was away from the water. The tour guide said we were at some spy station cannot remember what it was. I do not remember getting out of the van though not there seems like he got out. I just wondering if anyone might know where this could have been I do not remember maybe if someone has a link they could share?

Probably a NOAA or Coast Guard weather site? There's a big series of NOAA shortwave stations (KVM70) operating in Hawai'i. These days, I think it's mostly teletype and radiofax.

Not to mention WWVH, but that's on Kauai.

We didn't leave Oahu. I sure wish I could go back. I am older now and would remember more maybe. I dought I will ever be able to go back.

The antenna looked something like this.

It was on a tower but not real tall.

Hmmmmm. Just a guess, I'd think it's probably an over the horizon RADAR or an aviation VOLMET tower ("Honolulu Radio", with the call letters [surprise!] KVM70), since you described it as being at an Air Force base. But don't quote me on that, since I'm probably completely wrong. Maybe one of the other guys on here might know.

Nevertheless, Hawai'i has (or had) a LOT of shortwave activity; these days I think it's mostly for the benefit of mariners in, or pilots over, the Pacific. They have saltwater conductivity to help things along. Aside from the occasional Godcasters, shortwave's pretty quiet out here but it really comes to life when I'm at the coast.

Maybe it was something to do with Hickman AFB. It seem's like it was in a hidden secluded area. I just cannot remember that well.

If it was on an Air Foce or other military base, it was probably a log periodic...still a horizontal beam. the elements to the front are shorter than in the rear. Extremely wide-banded, requires little tuning. In use in MANY installations, including commercial marine....
