Huge comebacks

Don't know if this is the right board, but it's full of cool people. Pundits have been wondering if Michael Jackson could have made a huge comeback. How many groups or people can you name that really did?

1) Richard Nixon

2) Dean Martin from the end of the Lewis years and his return with Sinatra

3) Aerosmith

4) Jerry Lee Lewis. Done in Pop music and a huge comeback in Country

5) Conway Twitty ( same as above)

6) Jim Plunkett. Considered finished in New England and a huge return with the Raiders

7) Paul Anka. Basicallly done as a singer and back big as a writer.

Johnny Mathis.....huge gap between hits.
John Travolta
Elvis....still selling millions of records 32 years after his death.

Mentioning Paul Anka, both he and Neil Sedaka made comebacks in the mid '70s. They were both still only in their early 30s at that time! And it has been said that Sedaka's second career was actually bigger than his first!

bobby darin..only to die shortly thereafter
rick nelson...ditto
dion...barely survived

Gary U.S. Bonds, a 19-year gap, from 1962 until 1981.
Good one--"Out Of Work" was actually popular in 82 I think.
Yes, it was, but that was actually from the second album of Gary U.S. Bonds' comeback. "This Little Girl" was from 1981.

I thought everyone had forgotten about "Out of Work" by now. Good memory on that one! 8)

I believe Gary U.S. Bonds still holds the record for longest gap separating two top-40 hits, the aforementioned 19 years. I believe that is still the longest absence from the charts from which anyone has ever "come back."

I don't count Louie Armstrong because "What a Wonderful World" was reissued years after his death, and he obviously had nothing to do with it.

Lulu may qualify here..

Between 1967's "to Sir With Love" to 1981's "I Could Never Miss You More Than I Do".

Gee..I havent heard that tune in YEARS !!!!!!

The Beach Boys had a 22-year gap between #1 hits, "Good Vibrations" in 1966, and "Kokomo" in 1988. They were not completely off the charts during that time, of course, but they only made the top 10 once, not quite halfway through that stretch, when their cover of "Rock & Roll Music" got to #5 in 1976.

I believe 22 years is the longest gap between two #1 hits by the same artist.
