Huge Es Downunder incl 2-Es

G'day all

Es here in Australia was big on both 8th & 9th Dec Which included double hop from Western Australia (rare)
at around 2000+km. On the 9th, Es lasted almost a full 24hours from 5am - 3am the next day!!!

Band 1 TV DX had been HUGE from NZ, QLD & SA. Most NZ offsets were at S9 strength or above on my Icom's S-Meter.

Here is my log highlights.

94.5 6MIX Perth (stereo) "Mix 94.5"

95.3 6AAY Albany Clear w/ Hot-FM IDs.

Suprisingly, no sign of Nova 93.7 Perth.

Earlier the FM had been in From Northern NSW, NT, QLD & New Caledonia & New Zealand. Many 6m Ham beacons were also noted.

I suggest you look at an atlas to look up some of these locations. My location is south of our capital Canberra.
Nice to finally see a good season after the last 4 or so years have been ordinary.

most impressive...

I plotted most of 'em on the Windows Streets and Trips 2005 Map program...and to
translate for those of us in the US...the distances are staggering.
The Western Australia catches are between 1750 and 2000 miles
The New South Wales stations are about 500 miles
and the South Australis stations are about 750 miles out.

The WA DX is the equivalent of DXing Los Angeles FM here in Nashville...unreal.
Gotta remember that Australia is similar in size to the US: a lot fewer people and stations...
and a LOT less interference (I guess).

Hi All

Some more great FM 2-Es from WA today 10/12/06 at around 15:00 - 14:00 AEDST.
3rd day in a row for WA FM DX!

94.9 6ABC strong (stereo)
96.5 6GGG great signal in stereo w/ "WA-FM" IDs. Lasted 1/2 to 3/4 of an
hour.
98.1 6BAY briefly in stereo w/ ads & "Geralton's 98.1 The Spirit" ID.
94.5 6ABC Albany good in stereo
95.3 6AAY "Hot-FM"
96.9 R.National Albany

FM from SA was also good. Although some Adelaide stations registered RDS,
the tuner was unable to read any station names. The translator for SA-FM on 90.3 has the RDS injection level too low & thus requires a strong signal just to register an RDS signal, let along read any data!

New caledonia started the day at around 9:30am & was in for over an hour.
RDS registered on some TXers. Namely 90.0 RFO, 96.0 & 97.0 R.Djiido.

Highlights:
88.0 RFO
89.0 RFO
90.0 RFO (RDS "RFO RNC")
91.0 RFO
93.0 R.France International (RDS "INTER")
93.5 Energie (RDS "N R J")
95.0 Oceane FM
96.0 R.Djiido (RDS "DJIIDO")
97.0 R.Djiido (RDS "DJIIDO")
96.5 R.Djiido
97.4 R.Djiido
98.0 RRB
98.5 R.Djiido
95.0 Oceane-FM
89.5 RFO
102.0 R.Djiido
103.0 R.Djiido

Nice stuff there. The indicators have looked good for the US as well over the past few days, but all I've caught was brief flickers of SS on TV channel 2 and PBS on 3 and absolutely squat on FM.

I am envious, especially at those distances. That's simply impossible here.
