HUGE jump for The Fan

3.9 to 6.9 and #6 in 6+ means a huge jump for The Fan. It seems a finally successful Pirates team is really paying off for CBS! Remember when everybody was calling for it's demise when their initial ratings were pretty bad?

Although it's hard for guys like me to tell from looking at 6+ only, the fan has been performing as well or better than sports Talkers in other cities for quite sometime. Just like WFAN in NY who despite a 6+ of 3.2 have billing$ that are quite respectable.

Although this may be my first post here, I have been reading this board since before the fan started. Still waiting for the predicted Christmas music to start. :D

Since only subscribing stations are listed, it's impossible to judge 6+ rank. WSHH, for one, may be ahead of
them. WSHH could be #1, and we wouldn't know it.

Also, 93.7 got a 6.0, not a 6.9.

Still, as you noted, it's an excellent month for them.

The overhead is high

You sure about that? A high estimate for fulltime talent and fulltime producers/board ops is still around 950K. Doesn't that more than balance out the royalties a music station wuold pay?

I don't know what the music royalties would be. I'm saying the overhead is higher than it needs to be. They have more people than they really need, and should able to drop some of them when they start carrying CBS' network feed in non-essential hours.

I have been following sports talk radio since before WFAN debuted as the nation's first all sports radio station in 1987 on AM 1050.

And since that time, I do not believe an all-sports station has EVER received this 12+ number.

Ever.

The biggest rating I can recall an all-sports station getting is 5.0 on Boston's WEEI in 2004. And that was when the Red Sox and Patriots both won World Championships.

The station that I think is in a little trouble long-term is 104.7. Without baseball, their cume is the lowest it's ever been... the only reason they have such a high 6+ number is that their relatively small audience listens all day.

It will do very well this fall as election season progresses, but in general there's nothing new there to ever attract new listeners. Not even a credible local news presence, but rather a staff in Cleveland mangling the names of various towns. And there's not an iota of local content in Quinn's show either (not that it has hurt ratings, but again that can help cume).

There are still shows in other markets that have a local personality in place... Triv at WTAM, John Corby at 610TVN in Columbus, John Hancock nights at WBT, heck even WKBN in Youngstown has a couple of good local guys.

I wonder when this formula of all right-wing talkers runs out of gas?

I guess Quinn doesn't care about 104.7's cume as his show is geared to run in other markets. (I forget which smaller markets, but nonetheless, they do run in a few smaller markets). I agree. I think if there was local content in Quinn's show, it brings about a whole different show, with more topics, and probably different listeners calling in. I think it would be more interesting, but Quinn keeps it non-local for the fact his show does run in smaller markets.

Do people, who aren't in radio, turn on the radio and say, "That's not from Pittsburgh, turn the station?" Let me think ... nope.

Not the point. If 104.7 is happy with just the hard-core political talk audience, so be it. But as an example, WFLA in Tampa, also owned by CC, also carrying Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity, has "AM Tampa Bay" with tons of local content 6-10A, and delays Hannity for the local Todd Schnitt (yes, it's his real name..... he was MJ Kelli when he did CHR mornings on sister station WFLZ).

It's an opportunity to have some content other than national politics once in a while and maybe pull in some fringe listeners.

Pratte, I think WFAN in New York started out at am 660 back in the day. I could be wrong on that , if so smack me down with it.
