Hulu and Amazon to throw their hats into live streaming

A story today came out that Hulu is working on a live streaming service, which would be offered at $40 a month. The live streams will included most, if not all, of the Disney and Fox broadcast and cable networks (two of the co-owners of Hulu); Comcast/NBCUniversal, the other co-owner in Hulu, has yet enter into the new agreement. They're also seeking out other TV providers to be a part of this new venture; the new Hulu service is expected to launch in early 2017.

Meanwhile, from a report in late February, Amazon.com is also planning a live TV service, with at least AMC Networks, CBS, NBCUniversal, Disney, and a few other programmers on board. Its Prime service already offers live feeds of most of the Showtime and Starz networks via add-on subscriptions to the respective networks. No target date has been reported.

Hulu Confirms Plans for Live Channels

Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins confirmed the on-demand streaming service would morph into one that directly competes with traditional TV by adding live channels.

“We’re going to fuse the best of live TV and on-demand,” Hopkins said Wednesday at its NewFronts presentation to an audience of marketers in New York.

Earlier this week, news leaked that Hulu was working with networks at its parent companies — Disney, 21st Century Fox and Comcast’s NBCUniversal — on such a service, which would add feeds of live broadcast and cable TV channels to its current Netflix-like catalog of video-on-demand shows and movies.

Hmmm....Apple seems to have missed another opportunity here. Too focused on audio when everyone else is doing video.
