Hum on The River 97.1 FM

Has anyone noticed the hum on The River 97.1 FM today, or is it just my radio? Other stations are ok, so thinking its something with The River.

I don't know...not in Atlanta to find out. I did listen online though, and heard the Pretenders with "Back on the Chain Gang." I thought WSRV wouldn't touch stuff like this. They have totally gotten rid of their entire pop-sounding library- including softer hits by Elton, ELO, Billy Joel and more. They've replaced it with yet even more ZZ Top, Def Leppard and Guns N' Roses. I'm not really ready to label them "Classic Hits", it sounds too rock centered to be Classic Hits, which is supposed to be formatically softer than Classic Rock.

River has been trending towards classic rock for at least 2-3 years now. They reimaged the station several months back, and will occasionally refer to their music as "classic rock". But most of the time, they still call it classic hits.

They have definitely NOT gotten rid of the Billy Joel. They did a "Five Favorites From" Billy Joel last Friday, and seem to include one of his songs at least every few hours. On the lighter end, they get weird. They don't play Elton John (not even the harder stuff like "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" or "The B---- Is Back") but they do play Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks. They still play Blondie a lot, which was never AOR in ATL. I'd like to know their rationale for what they program on the lighter end, if it's something beyond the results of a ballroom test.

As an ELO fan, I am not sure why ELO (at least the pre-DiscoVery stuff) doesn't get more airplay on classic rock stations in general. For some reason, ATL radio (even Z-93 and the other CHRs) dropped ELO after Xanadu, but the north GA CHR stations (97 FOX and Wide 107) and other stations out of market kept them in the rotation through the end of their run. Power 99 did pick up "Calling America" in 1986, though.

Hum? Like a 60hz hum or something high pitched? I noticed months ago a high pitched noise but it went away not long after I heard it. I was listening this morning and it sounded fine to me, but then I wasn't paying that close attention.

I don't mind when a station strays a bit and plays something that's a little "out there" once in awhile. River is hit driven classic rock and I like the widened playlist and the fact that they do allow listeners to pick songs. "Five favorites from" is nice; I hear stuff I haven't heard in a long time.

All in all, River's doing well IMHO for its format.

Generally agree...River seems to be deftly straddling the lines of "not enough favorites vs. too much burn", and "going deep with plenty of 'oh wows' vs. playing the 'wrong' hits or 'someone else's favorites'"

Z93 would go really deep...and get lost in the weeds. River seems to be going deeper than they have been, while avoiding the weeds.
