HUNTER HAYES- WANTED

This was 19 year old Hunter Hayes first #1 at Country, off his debut album, and it climbed up 5 to #31 on this week's chart. I'm frankly surprised at its CHR success, as I didn't think it was destined to be a crossover. Any predictions on where it lands?

I'm thinking it may peak around #15- along the lines of the Band Perry "If I Die Young"- but will largely be ignored by some of the bigger stations in the less country friendly parts of the nation.

Country is having a renaissance, and its enjoying a success especially amongst youth, that it has experienced since its late 90s heyday when artists like Shania Twain were reguarly crossing over. Taylor Swift (if you still consider her country) just had her biggest CHR success, too.

Interestingly, this song was also covered by a young contestant on "the Voice" (Dez Duron) who isn't typically a country singer, so it probably aided in exposing this song to new audiences in the same way that "Glee" covering "We are Young" by Fun did.

^I think some stations will have it in power, and others won't touch it (depending on how well country is received in that market)

He's 21 now BTW

His station count is relatively low right now. I think there's a possibility that KIIS may one day add it locally but it seems unlikely that KAMP would ever touch it. You're correct that it will probably be in power rotation at some of these stations.

I couldn't remember his exact age but its nice to know he can legally drink a beer to celebrate his crossover to CHR.

^I actually think it's harder for country-resistant markets to accept male country stars - I think the Rascal Flatts only made it into the 20s - but Hunter Hayes is younger than they were so, yeah, I guess it might make it into the teens...

BTW Taylor Swift's biggest crossover success was in 2009, when Love Story and You Belong With Me both hit #1 CHR - We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together only peaked at #2

Thats an interesting argument about country resistant markets being less receptive to male country stars. Certainly, most of the country crossover in the "new country" era has been females like Shania Twain, Faith Hill, the Dixie Chicks, and Taylor Swift. Additionally, bands and/or songs headlined by females, like the Band Perry and Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" and "Just a Kiss" were crossovers too.

Is it that most of these women who have crossed over have done so with a more AC friendly song, while fewer male artists have done so? Ever we heard a male country artist cross over with a hit that wasn't really AC friendly since Billy Ray Cyrus? Not that this applies, because HH "Wanted" is AC friendly and doesn't really have a pure country sound.
