Hurricane Coverage - will it exist for the millions?

I noticed that tongight, KRLD, WBAP, and KSKY ALL ran either syndicated or canned shows (or both) in the evening. Rita is scheduled to hit tomorrow night. Will KRLD, WBAP, and KSKY (and KLIF, which I didn't check) have sufficient coverage for all the evacuees coming to Dallas (assuming the 1.8 million get here)??

If you work for any of these stations, are affiliated with any of these stations, know anybody at any of these stations, or work/are affiliated with/know somebody at ANY station... MAKE SURE DFW RADIO PROVIDES LIVE, UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION FOR THE EVACUEES OF HURRICANE RITA!!

With my tiny experience in radio broadcasting (short segments on Sundays), even I would be willing to help any way I can.

I just want to make sure we are (a) good hosts; and (b) keeping everyone up to date, not airing syndicated and canned shows when the Hurricane hits!

For the greater good (which is what I always understood radio to be),
CTL

The lack of in-depth coverage of the hurricane was apparent to me too.

KRLD still bills itself as the metroplex's news station. But when things are happening, KRLD is often nowhere to be found.

Even last night, I had to tune to WBBM in Chicago in my car to hear what was happening minute to minute with the Jet Blue airliner in Los Angeles.

During those times, the lack of an all-news station in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is glaring.

During the syndicated shows, the stations seem almost oblivious to breaking news.

The PDs can make all the excuses in the world, but none of them fly.

Radio on the cheap. What can I say?

"SUPPOSEDLY" KRLD is going to be the main feed fro stations along and around the coast so personel of stations in the area can evacuate. Fine and dandy..but what stations and where? Jim Ryan at WBAP is on the scene BUT he is mainly reporting for ABC. I haven't found one Houston station whose nighttime signal could reach DFW. WWL was lucky in a sort of way with their strength of signal and talent. KRLD is giving the impression they will have wall to wall coverage starting tomorrow and lasting through the weekend. We shall see.

Heck, few network TV carried it...most of the cable networks did though

Yep, Houston stations actually xmit to the gulf....Houston got screwed when it came to Class A stations; no clear channel like WBAP and nothing decent with somewhat omni coverage...KTRH is ok but they arent omni directional or even close...and have a BIG null to the north anyway...BUT most FMs are simulcasting TV audio or some CC FMs are carrying KTRHs audio (or supposed to be from what I read)...

The Houston stations are wall to wall with coverage...ABC13 is even being rebroadcast by TV12 in Beaumont....(but is anyone still there to watch? :)

13 even sent Wayne Dolcefino to Beaumont who is reporting live right now (he is on his "Dan Rather" trip again but I dont think tying himself to a tree would be a good thing now ;)

I have been watching ABC 13's fee out of Houston, and of all the Houston TV stations, I found their coverage to be the best, not to mention the least amount of difficulty with their stream. I can't say much about the other two, pardon the pun. It was extremely frustrating trying to monitor them online. This morning was especially good on 13, and good to see Shara Fryer again.

KRLD had one reporter down in Beaumont last night.. couldn't find a hotel room so I think he slept in his car. There's another one headed down that general direction today. Susquehannah radio now has capabilities to simulcast KHOU up here. Not sure which station it'll be on. KLIF maybe? I'm sure you'll hear more today. I haven't listened to the radio today.
______________

Wonder if its on KLIF, will Ed "The Cryptkeeper" Wallace get all bent out of shape because he wont be doing "Wheels" tomorrow morning??

Re: Hurricane Coverage - yes it will exist

IF KHOU is going to be simulcast on a station up here, it won't be KLIF. At least not tommorow. Here's what their website says::

Saturday: KLIF Is Live And Local All Day
5am-8am: Special Hurricane Rita Edition of Ankarlo Mornings with Darrell Ankarlo and newsman Ron Deroxtra.
8am-1pm: Special Edition of Wheels with Ed Wallace.
1pm-5pm: Special Hurricane Rita Edition of the Greg Knapp Experience with KLIF News Director Terese Arena.

So the answer is yes, for those interested Ed Wallace will be talking about Manufacturers Auto Leasing on Saturday.
Edited by Howlin' Mad Murphy on 09/23/05 09:12 PM.

Where was it during the Jet Blue incident?

During the Jet Blue incident, KRLD was missing in action.

Other Infinity news-talk stations around the country were not.

As Chris and I discussed, inane talk dominated KRLD that night.

So that's why we wondered what the Weighty Ten Eighty would do ... or not do.

The Heavy Five Seventy NEVER misses its infomercials.

Under emergency conditions, KTRH 740 AM in Houston could transmit with its day pattern, and it would reach Dallas.

Discussing radio, not television.

Big bucks to be lost if you dump the reality shows.

Again, KTRH would reach Dallas with its day pattern which it could use in an emergency such as Hurricane Rita.

It's the night signal that's dumped into the Gulf.

Last night, they made sure to get the WHOLE Rangers game in. When the brunt of the hurricane was coming ashore, they had a talk show on. Then the CBS News Roundup. Finally, at 4am, KRLD remembered Rita again. Brad has declared this morning that the effects of Rita will be diminished to the point of 2:35p this afternoon--of course, in time for ANOTHER Rangers game. Brad/Mike got tired about mid-morning so Ernie Brown and Mike Gallagher came in together for a mixed Saturday special. At least they weren't expecting Neil Sperry to hold the fort; something tells me somebody will pitch a fit because they can't ask Ernie/Mike/Neil a plant question....

Amazing.

It's gonna take one of us posters to win the lotto before a real news radio station comes along again around here.

KRLD news ... three strikes and you're out ...

I cannot pretend to make excuses for KRLD's lame news any longer.

It is pathetic, pitiful.

Re: KRLD news ... three strikes and you're out ...

Even Brad blew it this time. He said at 6am "Won't get much in the way of rain and wind from this" At 1:38 p.m. my wind gauge says 50 mph(gust) sustained 35 mph. and its Pouring in Rockwall.

50 mph plus in Terrell.

So much for meterology by correspondence school :)

WBAP -- "We are screwed up." KRLD -- We are not screwed up, because we are not doing anything. KLIF -- Screw the weather! We have bills to pay!

No need.

"The Weighty Ten Eighty" KRLD is not doing anything even with sleeping reporters.

WBAP does something every 30 minutes -- at 4:04 p.m. Saturday, Scott Crowder tried to call for weather information and announced twice on the air that "we are screwed up."

Yeah I guess so :).

KLIF ... The Heavy Five Seventy is covering Hurricane Rita from another story angle -- wall-to-wall infomercials.

Nope Rockwall,or was,it's calm down since the previous post ;)I trust my U.S. army surplus weather balloon wind gauge to KRLD's any day..

Yeah "Lose radio 1080"was giving some excellent opinion laced weather facts by eliminating as much fact as possible, saving time for spots.

WBAP "Weather Being Allowed Peridocially" was a a grim shadow of its former glory days, and even the shadow has faded.

"Balk 57 KLI"are we still on?" F was very gripping in its coverage of colon cleansing.

Remember when radio did the news in Dallas? Almost half a century ago.
