Hurricane Irene - TV Coverage

How has TV coverage been for Hurricane Irene thats making its way up the coast? I know New York City will probably get hit a lot harder then Boston. But Irene will still have a impact on the New England states.

WBZ has been having updates every half hour, along with WHDH, and WCVB has a ticker at the bottom of the screen. I'm pretty sure that starting tomorrow, all stations will have wall-to-wall coverage.

WMTW mentioned tonight that they are putting their coverage of the little league world series on 8.2 tomorrow so they can have have hurricane coverage all afternoon.

In the Providence area, WJAR 10 and WPRI 12 have had coverage this morning since at least 5:00 AM, and WJAR's storm coverage is simulcast on WHJJ 920 AM. WLNE 6 has had extensive storm coverage since early morning and WCTK 98.1 FM has been simulcasting their coverage, but unfortunately since around 8:00 AM this morning WLNE 6 lost their power and it is still off as of this writing. However, they can still be heard on 98.1 FM. I'm not sure if WNAC 64 had storm coverage this morning.

Am I the only one who doesn't "get it"? Just don't understand why so many stations are 24 /7 with the storm. How many times can you update a storm that is moving 14-16 MPH? Just do the update--where it is, any changes in direction and then get back to regular programming. Why do the stations put reporters on the beach in a hurricane just to tell people not to get on the beach?

Giraldo announced last night that Albany was the capitol of New York City! They just get on there with endless dribble and quite often are not giving good information.

@WPXT: I would guess that the LLWS also aired on ESPN, if not ESPN2, in Maine on Saturday. Also, do you know if the NASCAR night race from Bristol ran on 8.1 or 8.2 and/or ESPN?

Hard luck for the gang at WLNE. Just hard luck, that's all you can say.

By the way, had this been prior to 2009, WLNE wouldn't really need an FM simulcast. ::)

it aired on 8.1 at least during the part I watched.

Based on what happened in my neighborhood, there certainly was a need for continuing coverage. 80 mph wind gusts took down trees and put them on people's houses, leaving live wires draped over cars and the roadway. Though it may not have been as bad where you were, it was not good in other places.

Agreed. I was without power here in Attleboro since Sunday morning, and I have just had it recently restored about 2 hours ago, and you have no idea how much I wanted to tune into some kind of coverage of this storm...

That's why I was so happy that WJAR simulcast their coverage on 920 WHJJ and has continued to do so after the storm. I'm sure that station's Arbitron ratings will be through the roof for this week.
