Michael:
You need to make up your mind. In your scenario, if a R/TV station promotes their campaign to collect food, money et al....they're in it for the promo....but if its a GENUINE effort then its ok. Who is the arbitrtor of genuine?
You? Me?
If you've worked in radio or TV as I have, being jaded comes with experience, but most of the folks I've worked with WANT to help and are all about using the power of their medium to positively impact other people's lives...and yeah, they're going to promote it.
But if you study it, it is really one of the few times stations can break format, be creative and make their mediums as great as they once were. And yet you penalize them...then praise them.
I'll offer you another broadcast scenario. On my company web site, I put up a free PSA supporting the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Efforts...donation information et al for ANY station (broadcast, cable, internet) to use...FREE.
Now am I pointing that out so that people will be aware of it, use it and help create donations for this relief effort or am I simply the PT Barnum of voice overs? Am I both?
I'm just a guy trying to help in a situation where I am helpless and I am very willing to give those on R/TV who are raising money etc. the greatest slack possible for their efforts.
Might I suggest that instead of criticize, you quietly go out and support the efforts of the charity of your choice in helping people whose lives will be very uncomfortable for a very long time.
Don't respond to a bulletin board...respond to a need. And say a prayer that you and I never have to suffer the same fate as they have.
