Plenty of spares, then.

Actually, no. Unfortunately for them, the day and night signals both require the use of all 6 rusty and/or leaning towers of Burrillville.

Even if they were active now...the loss of only one would mean the ballgame's OVER.

But 990 (and sister 1320)...are even bigger jokes.

LOL! Nicely turned phrase! ;D

FWIW, RIPR was on with local reports from 5am to 10pm, and we stayed with ATC from 4pm to 10pm (save for 6:30-7pm which was Marketplace) both because ATC was offering a lot of updates and b/c ATC has lots of opportunities to drop in local newscasts.

WELH 88.1 was knocked off the air last night, but is back on at low power.

WELH proved problematic this week. We DID have a generator, and it worked fine, once started, during an outage the week before the storm (transformer blew at the Wheeler Farm...suicidal squirrel, we were told). But then during the storm, it didn't work. It refused to work through the existing breaker panel wiring, and was very unhappy any time we tried to power up the main Elenos transmitter. Eventually we gave up and ran an extension cord to the backup transmitter, which is only 300 watts but uses an omnidirectional v-pol folded dipole instead of the DA pair of panel antennas the main uses.

The rub was that the generator was gasoline powered and had to be turned off to refuel...and it only had enough tank capacity for about five hours of operation. Then it decided to get harder and harder to restart after every refueling, so refueling outages got longer and longer.

By Tuesday morning Wheeler managed to get a diesel generator that allowed refueling while running, and that made life a lot easier. Street power was restored by Tuesday night at 11pm.

Throughout this, we had a 30 watt "aux site" transmitter running from 1 Union Station (which never lost power, but we have a big nat'l gas generator here anyways) which is not much power and a very low height. Didn't cover much beyond downtown Providence but it was better than nothing. We also brokered a last-minute deal with WDOM for their to carry us on 91.3 (all student shows were cancelled Monday and Tuesday) and they VERY graciously agreed to do so and were very helpful. Many, many thanks to everyone at PC for that, especially the student GM, Brennan.

So the upshot is that I'm in the process of ordering a 14kW Kohler generator, auto transfer switch and three 100lb propane tanks for WELH right now. Also a nice UPS to carry it between power loss and generator startup. Tomorrow I do a site visit with the contractor to get the final quote and with luck that sucker will be installed before Thanksgiving. Working on some ideas for a more robust aux site at 1 Union Station, too.

For the record, though, we had generator backup at WCVY if we needed it (fortunately, Coventry High School never lost power) and also a hefty one at WRNI-FM in Narragansett and that genny's been running since Monday and is still going. Still got at least another day or two of fuel if we need it, but power's supposed to be restored today, I'm told. As far as our listeners were concerned, neither WCVY nor WRNI-FM had any problems at all during or after the storm.

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but...

I still miss RIPR not being on 1290. In just about all of the areas I usually find myself in (car), I always found 1290 to be a reliable catch, both day and night.

88.1......eh...not so much. Car reception starts getting a little spotty at the North Attleboro/Plainville line, and by the time I reach Wrentham...it's almost non-existant. Not so with the old 1290.

But that's only my experience. Your mileage may vary. ;)

I wouldn't exactly say you're in the minority, Dighton. There's been several folks who miss RIPR being on 1290...especially those who live in 1290's stronger spots that also happen to be 88.1's weaker spots. I suppose in the abstract would've been nice to have RIPR on both frequencies, but our partnership with Latino Public Radio is working out quite nicely, so I'd call it a win in the end.

FWIW, despite the lost listeners who got 1290 and can't get 88.1, we nevertheless HAVE seen a noticeable upswing in audience since moving to FM. There's something to be said about the argument that there's a sizable population out there that just never tunes to anything on the AM band.

Also FWIW, you must've had a really good radio to get 1290 way the hell up in Wrentham. And I have to assume that's daytime-only; the night signal starts getting questionable right after Pawtucket.

I should have specified. Wrentham is daytime reception of 1290, but the radio itself is nothing special...just an older model factory built Ford unit with the 31 inch fender mounted antenna.

I somehow doubt I would be able to duplicate that with a new factory built unit and one of those tiny "twig" antennas. :D

My pie-in-the-sky fantasy if RIPR were LOADED ($$$)....would be if they could somehow get thier hands on New Bedford's 97.3...all the reception RIPR would need with only ONE stick!

But 97.3 is in Massachusetts. It would be ironic for RHODE ISLAND Public Radio to be airing on a MASSACHUSETTS station. Even WELH's stick is in Massachusetts. Any way possible to get 88.1's stick moved into RI--perhaps on WPRO-FM's tower, without causing a conflict with 88.3/Bristol or 88.7/Smithfield? 88.7 would have been great for RIPR, too bad it is being used for yet another Boston-based simulcast.

Jacko

In theory, with an FCC waiver and cooperation with WGBH/Bryant, WELH could co-locate. Possibly in Rehoboth, more likely in Johnston. But given that RIPR and WGBH are, shall we way, "spirited competitors," I don't think it's gonna happen.

It also doesn't really matter what state the tower is in. A lot of Providence-market stations are in Rehoboth but nevertheless are only five miles or less from downtown Providence. Heck, I live in East Providence and I can walk to the MA border in less than 15 minutes.

FWIW, 97.3 might be in New Bedford, but so is WCTK and they're number 1 in the Providence market. Both stations put a pretty good signal over most of the population areas in RI.

What is with all of these college/high school stations selling out to NPR? I hate this! Thankfully, WRIU is back on & their normal programming!
