I’ve got a curious interesting question for you all!!!???

I was wondering how many people out here on this Chicago board own a Part-15 LPAM
Radio Station or do any Part-15 broadcasting here in the Chicagoland Metropolitan Area???

So far, I am counting two of us from this board who are: Tom Wells and Myself!

What about anyone else? Please don’t be shy! Express yourselves!

...so where's the interesting question? ;D ...
It seems to me that you do know or understand what is a Part-15 low power AM radio station is? ???
What I am asking? Is there any one else here on this message board in Chicago, have a hobby of
interest of broadcasting or doing small projects with radio transmittion at a small radious of rage up to
2 or 3 city blocks in the Chity of Chicago? Besides myself and one other person. :-\

I am still working on getting my PART15 AM running, I had hoped to have it up and running by April, but I had sick family member
that I was helping out, and I was actually a lot busier at my second job than I had expected(not complaining about that, more work
more money!)

I am hoping to have it up and running sometime in May. I did have it running for a short time in the early fall, but, I wanted to improve
my ground system so I shut it down, and with the rough winter this year and all the other things I had going on the past few months
it just wasn't something I could spend time on.

I also want to start a new website because I would eventually like to start a webstream. It is something I really want to do though
so it's just a matter of time.

Bob,

I'm in Florida..

I have a Part 15 AM and webcast that is basically a tribute to Chicago's WJJD 1160
during its 60s-70s country era.

Hey Bob....I love your hobbies. Back in the autumn of '72 I was on a small am station in Dallas. We also had a very low poer fm. The engineer called them '10 blockers' because the signals were so weak. I can't even remember the calls and I don't believe they're even on the air anymore. I live in Tulsa now. I'm native so Tulsa is home. I love Chicago radio. Best in the nation in my opinion. Good luck with your Part-15. Hope you make some money outta the deal.

Bob, I was just wondering if you ran your station 24 hours a day, or if you just ran it during your free time?
I was also wondering what kind of transmitter and antenna you use. Like I said before I'm trying to get my station back up and running
and I'm thinking of buying a better transmitter.

Thanks,TR1992

Hi Radioman148, It is called part 15 broadcasting, The FCC allows you to broadcast at very very low power(1/10th of a watt).
No license is required to operate, but, you must follow the rules very closely or you could be in some trouble with the FCC.
Most stations are only going to get you 2 or 3 blocks to about 1/4 or 1/2 of a mile(on AM), there our however some more
expensive transmitters you can buy which people have claimed to get their signal out four or five miles or more. It all really
depends on the area you broadcast from, for example you will most likely get better coverage in the country than you would in the
city, it also depends on your ground conductivity as much of an AM stations signal strength has to do with how well your station is
grounded.

I mostly talked about AM here and the reason is that the rules are a little different for AM than for FM. While you can legally do it
on FM you in all reality(if you are doing it legally and not being a pirate station) are probably only going to reach your neighbor's
backyard, that is because even though the legal power is the same for AM and FM the FM side is more restrictive about the distance
than the AM side. So basically you can get more range out of legal PART15 AM than a PART15 FM, that is why more people choose
AM.

I hope I helped to answer some of your questions, there is a great place here on Radio-info to find some great info with a lot
of nice people always willing to answer your questions. Go to the Specialty boards and go into Community radio board.

Have a good one,
TR1992

TR--

Thanks for answering my questions.
Where do I get one of these AM transmitters and what kind of antenna do I need?
Is there an internet sight where I can go to get more info.

Thanks again!

Only on my free time during the evenings or when ever I get around to it.
I have two transmitters Made both by Ramsey Electronics.
I have the AM-1 transmitter and the FM-30 transmitter.

This does sound like a lot of fun.

But...I don't live in my parents' basement. Can I still get one of these licenses?

You don't need a license, but if you're going to try to do this from a first or second story location, it'll never sound as good.

You gotta have it in the basement. or the garage. Never try to run a part 15 from your kitchen unless you are a single.
