I-93

They are all starting to play the same artists.

And there you have Top 40 radio in a nutshell, just as it has been for years and years. Ecclesiastes is right - there really is nothing new under the sun.

this station can succeed as an alternative to KISS by playing LOTS of music and keeping it moving.
My question is why sweepers have to be 30 seconds or more to TELL you they are playing more music...how about a five second sweeper that says "we play more music...I-93" and actually PLAY more music sooner...just a thought.

on the internet radio thing...when we have 3 or 4 g in car radio's, internet radio will explode. be a forerunner, listen to www.1650oldiesradio.com NOW!

(cheezy plug)

I don't listen to station for sweepers, DJ's (unless its talk) Although I do think Kiss DJ's are the most annoying. Unless I am not gonna hear Todays bubble gum pop. I don't want JUST more music.....Cause its just gonna be the same crap kiss plays. To me radio isn't about playing music anymore. It seems like its this giant circle jerk of big business trying to get their new artist on. and ALL THE TIME....... To say people listen to a new radio station because the sweepers are shorter or they play more of the same music. To me is kind of stupid.....If I was a PD at lets say KVIL. That station to me is Adult Contemporary. I wouldn't be playing gaga, Cyrus, and most of this new stuff. I'd stick to stuff like Foreigner, the eagles, air supply, Amy Grant, Wilson Phillips and artists like that. Easy listening (Light Rock)

All these stations defending the status quo will do nothing but hurt themselves in the end. They are all afraid to take a chance fearing failure, But end the end they won't last more then 10 years anyway before they flip the format again.......Rome wasn't built in a day. It is ignorant for Big radio to think they can bring on the same thing and expect anything different then before.

Give people a reason to listen to radio for longer periods of time then maybe their advertisers will come back....

I guess the term "Disk (or Disc) Jockey" has been consistent.

First discs played on air were 78's, 45's & 33's. Then compact discs. Now hard disks.

Radio since the mid 40's has alway been a promotion tool for recording artists no what genre. Its the talent and quality of sound that is different. Today the product overall is at its lowest common denominator. Miniscule talent is enhanced by better production tools. Auto Tone has definitely cheapen the sound, and each generation will lay claim to "their" music. No matter how bad it may sound. Talent has definitely been scraped together without nurturing or much of developing talent. The true test of a good song is how many years it can hold up. The last 15 years alone hasnt had many no matter what your personal tastes say. Ideas are not being creative, only copied. When you have movies Like "Fame, Footloose", and "Dirty dancing" being remade itsignifies studios and artists are running out of ideas and that no one one is willing to listen to fresh ones. Just tried and tired ones. Radio is in a rut and in the deeperst bowel of being in a rut its not allowing its targeted audience to participate like it used to and getting them involved, because it would mean spending money. We all know in the business in order to boost profits you cut. Sounds like the cuts have bled dry.

The whole Auto-Tone thing (like T-Pain does) is not really new. Zapp & Roger were doing similar stuff in the 80's.

But now it is just overboard.

Sorry, the station SUCKS! I'm a classic rock person and it was nice to have 93.3 and 92.5 to flip between on my commutes. After listening to the new format (gag!) for a few days, I've removed 93.3 from my saved stations. 97.1 is sometimes a little too hard rock for me but I guess I'll have to deal with just having 92.5 and 97.1 to listen to. Cumulus sure knows how to ruin good radio stations!!!
Dont Forget 102.5 They're Classic Rock!

Now About I-93 Its About Time We got a REAL Top 40 [although minus the jocks]
You have to give them credit on not leaning on one particular genre. It seems like they play all the top hits.

The T-Pain and Zapp thing is actually a Vocoder keyboard.
Autotone and Vocoders are two different things. A vocoder is a keyboard with a mic or tube. All you do is speak and the keyboard takes care of the tones. Autotone takes a vocal track and fixes any agumnted or diminished tones. In other words, it makes a crappy singer sound like they're not tone deaf. Remember, we can't "Milli Vinilli" it anymore with studio singers, so producers got around that with the Autotone.

BTW it's funny that more CHRs are popping up lately when the kids today are actually listening to music on iPhones, iPods and the internet. Radio is becoming the poor man's iPod.

YOU ARE SO WRIGHT !!! LOOK AT WWW.HOMIESRADIO.COM ( FULL MORNING SHOW ) OPERATING AS COMMERCIAL RADIO STATION ! NOT JUST THAT HAVE IPHONE , BLACKBERRY , ITOUCH, ETC... APPLICATIONS ( ALSO HAVE A FULL INTERACTING CHAT ROOM ) !!! WOW FM RADIO IS BECOMING THE POOR MANS RADIO ...

You hit the nail on the head! Never could understand why ACs play nickelback, Fray, Gaga, Etc. They belong on HOT AC. Radio people ofter try too hard to out-hip their l;isteners. When I turn on AC i want to hear Celion Dion, Carey, Whitney, Chicago, Eagles, Etc

Consultants, PDs and Group PDs are so out of touch these days.

"Homiesradio" : If you want to hear the amateur Hour or step back in time when you played DJ talking into a walkie talkie with a close -n-play for your turntable, then this is the place.

I was (sort of) stuck listening to I-93 last Sunday night. I don't really hear a Kiss competitor there. All I heard was a slew of songs by a different barely-pubescent-sounding Hispanic kid on each one. Maybe it was a "feature CD" or "homie" hour, or perhaps this is what Top 40 consists of these days. I was not impressed. If music today is nothing more than the Grandkids of Menudo trying to make a buck, count me out. After 20 mins or so, I found an off-ramp on I-93 and went somewhere else. Of course, I'm not 18 anymore, but we really didn't have this annoyance when I was. (OK, we had the New Edition and the kids who sang, "Pass the Dutchie.")

Or maybe Cumulus is trying to ruin the format the same way they poisoned the Classic Rock concept at The Bone.

Question...will we actually have any "classics" out of this generation of music? Hell, count the whole 2000's. Will KLUV be playing this crap in 20 years? Will we ever yearn for the old school days of Jay-Z and Kon-yee West? (Kinda like what cars of the last 10-15 years will ever be considered "classics"? And don't count "retro" vehicles...they're ripoffs of classics.)

Yeah, same goes for that crossover country garbage being played on a LIGHT ROCK station. Why?? Gotta hand it to KVIL on one thing...they will still throw in an "ahhh" song every so often. Heard "Just You and Me" by Chicago on there the other day. I was fully expecting Jack Schell to give me the People's Choice total when the song ended.

Speaking of, there is one thing at KVIL that has never caught on with anyone on this board, even after nearly 4 years--we all still call it "KVIL," not "Lite Rock 103.7," no matter how hard the station has tried to disassociate itself with the call letters.

I worked in Austin in the 90's. Had to call up our corp office in Dallas a few times, was put on hold and forced to listen to KVIL. That was painfull.

Back to orignial topic: Quality Rock was a good concept but had no advertising on billboards or bumperstickers or anything. (I would not have known that they had flipped from The Bone except for this board.) The new I93.3 seems to have the same prob. Sounding like a poor mans Kiss-FM is not the way to go.

The definition of a Lite Rock station has changed and evolved through the years.

I'm going to go off on a tangence here and further discuss traditional soft rock since it seems there are several posters on this thread who enjoy it.

The format was in many ways at its best in the 80s when a lot of soft rock records were big hits on the Pop charts. Atlantic Star's "Always", Chris De Burgh's "Lady In Red", Foreigner's "I Want To Know what Love Is", Sade, Kenny G, Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time", Benny Mardones "Into The Night", Chicago's "Will You Still Love Me", Dan Hill "Sometimes When We Touch", REO Speedwagon "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore", Phil Collins "Against All Odds", Peter Cetera/Amy Grant "Next Time I Fall In Love", Christopher Cross "Sailing", Air Supply, Brian Adams "Heaven"", Glen Mediros "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You", Richard Marx "Hold On To The Nights", Joe Cocker/Jennifer Warnes "Up Where We Belong", Patrick Swayze "She's Like The Wind", Lionel Richie "Hello", Peter Cetera "Glory of Love", Whitney Houston "Didn't We Almost Have It All", Mike Reno/Ann Wilson "Almost Paradise", The Deale "Two Occasions", Europe "Carrie"

Alltime Soft Rock favorites would be
Moody Blues "Nights In White Satin"
Simon & Garfunkel "Bridge Over Trouble Water"
Richard Marx "Hazard"
Chicago "You're The Inspiration"
Eagles "Hotel California"
Bette Midler "The Rose"
Bonnie Rait "I Can't Make You Love Me"
Mike & The Mechanics "The Living Years"
Carole King "It's Too Late"
Rolling Stones "Angie"
Alphaville "Forever Young"
Mamas & The Papas "California Dreaming"
Michael Learns To Rock "That's Why You Go Away"

The best Lite records in the 90s tended to be R&B ballads. Songs like
All 4 One "So Much In Love"
Shai "Comforter"
Jodeci "Lately"
Boyz II Men "In The Still Of The Night"
Mariah Carey "Hero"
K-Ci & Jojo "All My Life"
Brian Mcknight "One Last Cry"
Vanessa Williams/Brian Mcknight "Love Is"
Luther Vandross "Here And Now"
Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You"

Why am I hearing Theory Of A Deadman on a LIGHT ROCK station too? Are they supposed to be Alternative Rock band?
