Please read this excerpt from the Wall Street Journal about the layoffs coming on Tuesday to CC:

On the radio side, the company is likely to eliminate chunks of local programming and replace it with national programming, much as it has brought Ryan Seacrest's Los Angeles-based radio show to other markets in recent months. If a local show seems successful, the company will try to syndicate it faster than it might have in the past, a person familiar with the situation said.

The bulk of Clear Channel's job cuts will be in sales, dropping those who aren't top performers. "The focus is on rewarding the very best salespeople, and letting them maximize their own compensation," in part by picking up accounts from their less-stellar peers, this person said.

When I read this, it made sense to me. Eventhough it depresses me to think of all the people and families that will have to worry when somebody loses their job come Tuesday. However, shouldn't the employees that perform well be rewarded? Especially in a market like Atlanta?. Why do some stations in this market keep failing jocks, programming staff, and sales people employed? Wouldn't it make sense--especially in an economy like this--to flush them out, trim the fat and replace them with harder working people that deserve a little bit of a raise? And I am not just talking about Clear Channel. Think about it...some morning show hosts in this market get paid $200K+ and their shows don't even rank top 10 in their respective demos. Also, if local jocks are doing well consistently why not syndicate them in other markets to save money across the board? I've also seen a gratuitous amount of laziness on the part of ae's. Presumably, ae's understood the issue with the economy from months ago and many of them made no attempt to prepare themselves. I just can't make sense of it these days.....

Hehe. Not the Mays brothers...just a disappointed young jock trying to make a living in this market....

Looking back at the initial post, did I really sound like that much of a suit? Don't get me wrong-- I guess what I was trying to articulate was that there are, in fact, hard working people that will be getting fired at CC that deserve a chance and it's not simply the people that have the highest output that should stay. I am just angry at the lazy people that take advantage of their employment. I am around it everyday, and it kills me to see it. That's really where my view point came from.

No, it is frustraing being a young person in radio and seeing how the established ways of doing things hang in there even when change is needed. This Clear Channel news seems to be more about laying off weaker sales people, which will be good news for a change.

"Make a living" and "in this market" are two phrases that just don't go together.

For your own sanity and long-term happiness ... get out of the radio business while you can! There is no long-term future for local on-air personalities.

Find a REAL career quickly ... and I don't mean joining the 45,000 other "voiceover" talents in the Atlanta market!

How fast can you get a nursing degree?
