Please read this excerpt from the Wall Street Journal about the layoffs coming on Tuesday to CC:
On the radio side, the company is likely to eliminate chunks of local programming and replace it with national programming, much as it has brought Ryan Seacrest's Los Angeles-based radio show to other markets in recent months. If a local show seems successful, the company will try to syndicate it faster than it might have in the past, a person familiar with the situation said.
The bulk of Clear Channel's job cuts will be in sales, dropping those who aren't top performers. "The focus is on rewarding the very best salespeople, and letting them maximize their own compensation," in part by picking up accounts from their less-stellar peers, this person said.
When I read this, it made sense to me. Eventhough it depresses me to think of all the people and families that will have to worry when somebody loses their job come Tuesday. However, shouldn't the employees that perform well be rewarded? Especially in a market like Atlanta?. Why do some stations in this market keep failing jocks, programming staff, and sales people employed? Wouldn't it make sense--especially in an economy like this--to flush them out, trim the fat and replace them with harder working people that deserve a little bit of a raise? And I am not just talking about Clear Channel. Think about it...some morning show hosts in this market get paid $200K+ and their shows don't even rank top 10 in their respective demos. Also, if local jocks are doing well consistently why not syndicate them in other markets to save money across the board? I've also seen a gratuitous amount of laziness on the part of ae's. Presumably, ae's understood the issue with the economy from months ago and many of them made no attempt to prepare themselves. I just can't make sense of it these days.....
