I Am Loving WASL-SL 100

Ha! Not just necessarily poor memory...just don't care enough to research it.
(cannot rule out memory issues though...I was a teenager in the 70's and easily could have damaged it)
;D

Meepster, how did you ever get into pharmaceutical sales? That is not something that I could see a former broadcaster getting into, not without getting specific training for it, anyway! (I am looking at medical billing/coding myself.)

And to keep this on topic, I was told by someone on here that Amy Maxey is now in pharmaceutical sales now, too. I suppose she was (only) doing sales while she was at SL-100, so I suppose that was not too much of a jump for her.

Fire...it just kind of happened. I have the personality of a successful salesperson. For many years radio stations tried to get me onvolved in their sales departments, too. I ALWAYS resisted. Then, once between radio gigs, I took a job in a phone room selling drugs to pharmacies. I did very well and they put me on the road. I hated every moment of it but LOVED the $$$! Did it for a long time because it was good money and it was the first time I NEVER had to work on the weekend nor past 5 at night.
I almost always kept in radio part-time, it was easy to get jobs then because it wasn't so common to make your full timers v/t weekend shifts, etc.
Nearly always, they'd kind of let me pick the shift(s) I wanted on the weekends and rarely gave me any issues when Mrs. Meep wanted me to do something or hang with the family and have a weekend off.
Then, I was finally lured with just enough cash and benefits to get back into radio full-time and was there again for the next few years.

I know...boring, but it answers a question.

Just wanted to weigh on on this subject. I don't want to be a downer to WASL....especially if revenue is up and things are going well for you.

However, I can't listen to the station. JB&B isn't for me (I know they are loved by many in West TN)...they aren't funny and are mostly loud and obnoxious. Again, not for me, so I don't tune it. If they are working for the station...great!

I don't get to listen to mid-days, but I do get to listen in the afternoon.

Quite simply, the station, to me, is boring. I don't like the imaging, the playlist is all over the place and, sorry man, Roger...you have no personality whatsoever. If reading off a liner card and back selling is what your audience wants, then keep on keeping on.

Similarly, I switch back and forth to WYNU and it's like night and day. The playlist is consistent...I'm not saying I like it...but the "Deep Cut" is a nice touch. Gregg is what an afternoon jock should sound like. He's relatable and throws in nice tid-bits about the music.

Again, I just happen to see this thread and wanted to weigh in. Roger, if the numbers and revenue are strong in this weak economy, then my hats off to you. I don't see it, but you must have a strong sales staff.

I also want to make it clear that all of the stations that I have been involved with in a managerial capacity have been successful. Not because of me, but because of the team of people I have been lucky enough to work with over the years. I've been fortunate in that I have worked with some of the best talent this market has to offer in both programming and sales.

That's a great mentality Roger and I'm glad to see you spread the wealth among your staff.

Tell ya what though, what station are YOU on? Maybe I can listen and get some pointers for my weak middays. Funny, the only thing I find truly weak is the pathetic way the WATERBOYS of radio still try to coach from the bench.

I don't see it as coaching from the bench. A lot of us on this (and other) boards are former jocks. We hear folks that are good and folks that need work. Granted, some posters are a little more harsh in their criticism, but when we post, we're voicing an opinion on how to improve. There is always room for improvement...even if you're a great jock.

The reason most of us aren't on the air locally is because we can't afford it. I would love to program a station, get in the production room and interact with callers on-air, but the reality of it is that I have a mortgage to pay every month. Since there's no union, most (not all) station hire young talent fresh out of school or talent that are just "paying their dues" until they move on for low pay, 6 day work weeks, holiday and questionable benefit package.

I'm not saying WASL is like this, but a lot of local stations are like this. PD/OM's aren't working with the talent because I keep hearing the same mistakes over and over again. Do air-check sessions still exist...do you air-check yourself?

I realize that small stations rely on a small staff, but unless they give me a reason to listen, I turn on my iPod. Local calls, interesting contests, specialty segments...that's what makes me want to listen every day.

I'm not trying to coach from the bench...just offering some advice to keep or develop a listener to your station.

AMEN!!! well said! The Northwest Tennessee is in need of change.

Boy......this thread has really been interesting. I talked with Roger Vestal but don't really know him, but I know Eddie Burks pretty well and he has a rare ability to make money at practically everything he touches. Ben Edwards, his 'second in command' is a sharp fellow too. I"m not exactly sure where Eddie's daughter Natalie fits in up there. I do know that they have progressed lightyears from where they were back in the early 80's.

I heard just today that Maxey is still doing Dyer County sports on one of the stations and that the 101.7fm
low power for am-1450 is off the air for the past three days?

Thanks....I vote for the iPod. J/k...actually the entire outburst was to force Meep to argue with me. It worked.

Airchecks? I'm afraid those are lost in time. They shouldn't be.....we all need a wake-up call now and then.

There are too many options for listeners these days...you have to evolve and stay ahead of the curve. Easier said than done, but it should engraved, put on a plague in the studio and each jock hit it like Notre Dame players hit the "Play Like A Champion" sign before each ball game. ;D

Did this station change format since I last heard them? I better start a new thread asking this since there are a lot of replies here. I really wanted to hear them online again but I just called and they said no plans for streaming. I don't know why this station in the middle of nowhere is that great - it just is and I want to hear it badly!

This is not just to take a swipe at SL-100. I think they're doing fairly ok for who and what they are.
But unless you live now in an area where there are only daytime AM talkers, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what to you is so awesome about SL-100.
Granted, after being involved with radio for only 30 years or so, I may not have the ability to pick up on things...but please, do tell, what is so GREAT about SL-100.

I don't think anyone who WORKS there would agree that it is as awesome as you are proclaiming it to be.
If you think that's a GREAT station...you need to let me send you a few airchecks...you'll think that some of the stations I worked for were friggin' WLS Chicago back in the early 70's.

It's okay, and the music is usually pretty good...but AWESOME!?!?!?!?!!!!??

???

Interesting that a little station in the middle of nowhere is the topic of the top three threads on the TN board. (say that fast five times)
I appreciate the complimentary comments and even the mostly constructive criticism from Meepster.

Well...you have a pretty good pedigree, a good standing with the community and a lot of potential...as I said in the other thread, I think we all want to see live, local radio succeed.

And that alone has got to be burning up that Knoxville guy who reads this board and complains that too many west Tennessee stations get mentioned here! ;D

As for me, I'm reading from here in middle Tennessee, and enjoying it! ;D

Meep

I've heard it before but it may have changed since then - one of the stations I truly enjoyed listening to. I thought they were still hot AC. The logo is pretty deceiving then but also one of the best I've seen. And who can go wrong with John Boy & Billy in the morning? It's the only other station named SL besides WNSL SL 100 at 100.3. Do you have any airchecks of this?
