I am right, they are wrong

On my mother's behalf I asked on WTNH's Facebook Page if they are going to re-broadcast this morning's episode of The View which was interrupted by breaking news about a fatal plane crash. Channel 8 viewers told me my mom and I are insensitive if we think that The View is more important than breaking news about a plane crash.

There is nothing wrong with my question. And there is also nothing wrong with the suggestion that I made to Channel 8 that they carry breaking news on MY TV 9.

They could also move The View. Sorry, but breaking news where lives are lost is an order of magnitude more important than a babblefest.

There's nothing wrong with you asking, but I agree 100% with WTNH.

Wow, you'd rather watch a bunch of yentas babble on?

Definately a bit insensitive.

Without getting into "right" and "wrong", what other viewers think about you is irrelevant.

What did WTNH say? Generally, stations will attempt an airing (possibly overnight or on the weekend) of popular shows pre-empted by breaking news.

You probably could have waited a day or two before asking.

Which would have been useless if they re-run the show overnight tonight or during the weekend.

No, what he should have done was call the station on the phone and ask to speak to the programming department. They'd have been able to tell him if they were thinking about airing The View.

As insenstive as it sounds (okay, is), TV stations get these calls all the time. We got them on 9/11. We got them when we invaded Iraq. But a public posting to Facebook makes you look like you give less than a $&@! about your town and the people in it.

In which case you don't ask at all and you just wait until later in the day when the station might announce it anyway.

When WCVB/Boston preempts programming all day during a blizzard to carry news all day (because they are a "public information station" or whatever it's called), they always mention that the programs usually airing at that time will be shown overnight.

Which requires not taking your eyes off the set for fear you'll miss the announcement.

Why not just call the station? You'll either get a yes or no or maybe...and if it's a maybe, they'll know they need to announce it on the air and put it online (website, Facebook, Twitter) so that people know when to watch or set their DVRs.

Having spent the past 30 years in TV, I can tell you, stations are used to calls from viewers about pre-emptions.

Actually WCVB now shifts programming to 5.2, preempting MeTV programming, in case of breaking news or blizzard coverage.

And, after a quick Google, it's a good bet WTNH got a lot of calls. Today was Joy Behar's much-hyped farewell show. A phone call would have been the best way to handle it.

The View is online on ABC's website . Like most others show on the network.Which is great if people have access to the internet.

I know the stations probably get flooded with phone calls and emails from house wives that are all upset because of their favorite soaps got pre-empted do to special reports from the president and other breaking news events like Fridays plane crash in East Haven CT for example.

Wait a minute, so now MarcB is a "house wives that are all upset"? ;D

Oh Ok .I understand.

when ABC ran the animated CLERKS series, the local ABC station preempted it for a program about a concert that was recently at the nearby concert venue.i called the station and i guess i reached the programing department.they mailed me a VHS tape of the show.

You're all kidding, right?

No. It happens every time there's a big story that pre-empts programming. Here's what WSB-TV in Atlanta put out on Twitter when today's elementary school gun incident happened:

WSB-TV
@wsbtv
SOAP ALERT: Due to #McNairShooting coverage, today's episode of General Hospital can be seen tonight on #wsbtv at 2:05am

In order for them to re-run the programming they would need to have been recording it from the network in the first place. If they didn't know the special report was happening before the show started, they would not be recording it.

Not how TV works these days. Most stations record everything for legal reasons. They also routinely record the network feed so they can have excerpts in their local newscasts.

And, if somehow they weren't recording the network when they switched to breaking news, a phone call to affiliate relations is all it takes to get a digital re-feed, which takes minutes.
