Cornershop have always been one of those bands with loads of potential. They're a very creative band and I'm a big fan, but the problem is that they're difficult to pigeonhole - that has contributed to their weak sales in the U.S. That and a lack of strong label support. They managed to get one radio hit ("Brimful Of Asha"), but that was it - not for lack of effort, of course. Of course, maybe they would be more popular if they had released more than 2 albums in the last 11 years ... are they even still around anymore?
DMB sells lots of albums, sure. But they're hit and miss, and their studio output has gotten progressively weaker. They're one of those bands that fall in the same category as Phish and OAR - excellent live bands who are usually unable to translate the same magic in the studio. Of course, they're far more accessible than Phish, and that's why they have a few platinum albums under their belts.
Nickelback is easily one of the worst bands in recorded music today. I would compare them to Journey, Styx and Foreigner, but as awful as those bands were, at least some of the members were very solid instrumentalists. Not only do their songs sound exactly alike(
http://www.thewebshite.net/nickelback.htm), but their generic sound is a derivative of Creed and countless other post-grunge bands, and their lyrics are beyond atrocious. They either read like a bad Hallmark card (
http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/n/nickelback/far_away.html - "Far Away"), or something a Neanderthal would write (
http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/n/nickelback/figured_you_out.html - "Figured You Out"). And they show no signs of changing: The first single "Gotta Be Somebody" is glossy commercial dreck for soccer moms at its worst, they have Mutt Lange (who has worked with the
brilliant Shania Twain and Def Leppard, among others) producing, and the new album has song titles like "Something In Your Mouth" and "S.E.X.". I find it astonishing that a band that is this lacking in any kind of talent can be so popular. But then again, we're a nation that considers Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Soulja Boy Tell Em, and others to be "geniuses". We definitely have a bunch of Einsteins walking among us, that's for sure.
