I was hoping they would just flip back to the zone and alt like k rock did in new york when they flippped there free fm but no they have to flip to something this city did not need!!!Wasn't power and kiss enough for hip hop? Well i for one will not be listening thanks cbs for nuttin but a wasted frequency in phoenix!!!
I am inclined to agree. Free-FM was terrible, but one thing that this market doesn't need is another station playing the same 30 songs over and over.
Ironically, this is not entirely dissimilar from how it was in the late 80s/early 90s with KZZP, Y95 and Power92, and we all saw how that worked out; KZZP and NCI decided in their infinite wisdom to fire Bruce Kelly, and modify their sound, which, along with a few other factors, resulted in their demise, Y95 never established itself with a true sound one way or the other--although they weren't a terrible station--they were all over the map and Power92 experimented with many different format tweaks until they decided to go with Hip-hop. There was a window of time where Phoenix didn't have a true Top40 (CHR) station for awhile in the mid 90s.
Fast forward to today where we have 3 stations that certainly overlap, Power98.3 is the most hip-hop leaning of the three, but KZZP is very rhythmic leaning and KZON is apparently the same way, if history has taught us anything it is that 3 stations that sound very similar cannot co-exist forever in Phoenix. KDKB, KUPD and KSLX all overlap quite a bit and if you glance at the ratings, one of them will eventually have to go. Although in the case of KDKB, KUPD and KSLX, they are all owned by one company and can therefore afford the luxury of mediocre programming decisions as there is really no other competition. There is absolutely no way that power 98.3, 101.5 Jamz and KissFM will all be left standing within the next two years. We shall see.
