I Cannot Stand This Idea!

This is where I argue many stations have a stationality problem. Your sweepers should always be linked to the type of song they're segueing into. All it takes is the time to set that up in your scheduler, and in most schedulers, it doesn't take that much time to do. To not do so is pure laziness on the part of whoever is responsible for such things.

Of course, if your jock does have the option to do it manually, teach them how to do it and let them do it right. If I'm live, the only time I let the automation system run on it's own is when I'm taking calls or I'm in the bathroom. I fire everything off on my own, and I make sure my timing is perfect. That's the only way to know for sure you're running a tight show.

Well, you may be getting so tight you'll run into problems...manually firing your elements early or just as the computer would've done it, next you've got 3 things playing at once. Plus sometimes you can't trust the cue counter on your intros. I'm always running into incorrect intro timer...most too early, but the worst are the ones that run past the post.

I guess if you're getting payed to/and or have that much time on your hands, go in, delete every liner & I.D, & slap 'em in button bars & run 'em yourself. A quiet song(Fergie...Big Girls)...would have station voice using a slow delivery & mellow tone overtop the tune)...then a really hyped jammin' one into Bow Wow "Easy" with little fx....but total hype & fx into say, Nickelback "Rockstar that starts cold. Wish I had that much time to be worrying about this stuff! :)

This is why you always teach your talent to never, I repeat NEVER rely on intro countdowns! Know your music, and know it well. Always make the time to learn the songs your station is playing... where the intros and outcues are, what's cold, what fades, what has a false ending. Know your music. Back before computer-based automation systems, jocks had to know their music. There's no reason they can't do the same today, and I require myself to no matter how accurate the intro countdown may be.

You don't necessarily have to slap your elements into instant play pages, though that's handy. You can also just toss 'em in the playlist (if your automation system gives you that freedom) on the fly. You can also fire things off manually from the playlist in most systems I've come across. But again, if you're going to do that, you have to know your music... and all your other audio as well. That's why I said in my prior post: PD's should be teaching their talent how to do this if they don't already have the skill. It's one of those things you need to know if you're going to be in radio.
