I Can't See Why KDWN AM 720 Causes Controversy

I can't seem why KDWN would be an issue anyway. Listership is quite low. According to arbitron, KDWN never got passed a *** share. They peaked at 2.0 last year. They haven't had high ratings since the early 1980's when they were in the ***s. With Rush Limbuagh, "Coast To Coast With Art Bell" gone, KDWN has had quite a difficult time building an audience.

If the station does draw controversy, then I must assume that there are more listeners to KDWN than the Arbitron ratings are reporting.
Edited by Safford on 06/01/05 09:09 PM.

Controversial or not, KDWN is a necessary outpost for many, many listeners who Arbitron, Nielsen, & others tend to either ignore or overlook. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people who are shut-ins, seniors who are alone, graveyard workers of various types, & probably the biggest group of all (i'm in this one) - persons who are fed up with shock-jock radio & hip-hop/rap crap that passes for today's so-called radio programming. Listen to the PartTimePete program at midnights on KDWN & hear what this audience says/thinks about the station. Radio is a meduim in which it plays a vital part in many lives (for whatever reason), & just because Arbitron doesn't says so, DOES NOT MEAN that a station isn't a factor in a particular community! The recent departure of the 25+ year program "The Stardust Line" is a prime example. You do not sponsor a radio program for that length of time without a large, loyal following! (I'm proud to say that I was a listener from the program's inception to the end.) Remember one more thing about radio: unlike television, where you almost have to be watching attentively to it to know what's going on visually, all you need to enjoy radio is your ears & mind while you go about your daily business of living.

kgo kfi koh etc these big watt am's have an active listenership....whether they have numbers or not....

the above post about JD is from a year ago and it was because I didn't like the long thread between him and someone else..and it was dealing with that thread.....I don't know why it showed up now out of context...he seems to be doing a good job with the resources he has on 1280...and with kyawn changing its 1280 840 and 1230 for talk and news on the am he is as good as the others..

..I can't see Dr Laura being worth the time slot she gets....a weekend show maybe...

Arbitron does not ignore any of those groups you mention. It is a random probability sample, and if you have a phone, you are in the sample frame. Nobody is ignored or overlooked.

A person's programming taste does not determine eligibility for being part of the ratings, either.

If a station shows up with little or no listening in Arbitron, it is because it has little or no listening. Simple as that (Nielsen has not rated radio since the 50's)

A station with a small audience is one with a small influence.
