Oh yeah!. And in L.A., 101.1 FM is also a miserable failure, even though it still bills a decent amount.
I have only listened to Jack twice while visiting Los Angeles, and was amazed at the selection of 'Modern Rock Oldies' they play. There is a demonstrated need in Southern California for an outlet to play Flashbacks from the 80's. Now if only they could refine their sound, and get rid of the other crap they play, Jack has the potential to become L.A. & Orange Counties Radio Leader! <P ID="signature">______________

Oh yeah!. And in L.A., 101.1 FM is also a miserable failure, even though it still bills a decent amount.

The early success JACK/LA is having is actually quite typical for Variety Hits. JACK/NYC is in the failing right out of the gate minority. So you could look at it as "Can NYC and the US be that different?"
As sf pointed out, part of JACKS problems in NY could be that it replaced a well loved oldies station. Miami also brings up a good point. By playing some old New Wave/KROQ type songs KCBS has an LA vibe. From what I read on the NYC board, the JACK there doesn't have a NYC vibe in the least,it leans far more rock than the market does. The NY JACK plays very little rhythmic oldies, probably in an attempt to seperate themselves from rhythmic AC sister station WNEW.

Every Jack station has a slightly different playlist. Here, to play off the heritage of co-owned KROQ (and recall that Jack has the same PD), there are more modern rock and alternative titles sprinkled in.
I would venture to say that the NYC Jack still doesn't have the right music mix. Or possibly does not have the right PD.
And Arrow was not doing as bad in the ratings as KRTH, although WCBS was slipping badly. (BTW, it's spelled "dying".)<P ID="signature">______________

Good observation, which begs a question: Why did CBS replace Arrow with Jack, rather than KRTH? My own theory: KRTH partisans are very loyal and identify themselves with the station; Arrow listeners never ID'd that closely with the station. (KLOS listeners, OTOH, are pretty darn loyal.)
