I feel bad for FoxTalk950, no, more like ANGRY!

I'm angry because KJTV AM 950 is not being properly monitored. Today, the station had lots of potential to do things right, and everything went wrong. This morning, Glenn Beck was supposed to start, and instead, there was dead air for 5 minutes.

At noon, they were supposed to be simulating a special live report from Fox34, but instead, it was botched in the beginning, as the local news insert ran over Jeff Klotzman.

And these are just today's screw ups, it's a daily thing.

Is this the station that Kay Boren, Mike Stevens, Chuck Hinze and I built? I think not!

So I'll bet you're thinking this is going to be another one of those "bash the owner" type of emails.
WRONG! NOT THIS TIME!

You know, you can only blame the boss so many times. But at some point, you have to look in the mirror. Guys, you can throw all the money in the world at a radio station, but in the end, it's the human hands that make a difference. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW EXPENSIVE THE EQUIPMENT IS, IF YOU DON'T DO YOUR JOB TO RUN IT PROPERLY IT WILL SOUND LIKE GARBAGE, REGARDLESS!!!!!! Is it training? Is there not a PD watching over the kids running the board?

My own guess is that it's a little bit of both. Let this be a message to Patrick and all the other guys running the board: If you love radio enough to work in it, you need to watch what you are doing! You need to keep a constant ear on the station! IF YOU ARE TOO BUSY WITH SCHOOL OR OTHER PRIORITIES TO CONCENTRATE ON YOUR STATION DUTIES, YOU SHOULD QUITE OR BE TERMINATED! When I worked there, I made mistakes, no doubt, but I spent 24 HOURS A DAY WORRYING ABOUT HOW THE STATION SOUNDED WHEN I WASN'T THERE! Sometimes, I'd even keep my clock radio on overnight and check in to see if the automation was running. If it wasn't, I was in the studio at 2 AM in the morning fixing it.

And these were the days before Charley Jones was syndicated on the station.
Really, working that board and touching that playlist are a PRIVELEDGE! If you are lucky enough to be allowed a card and a password into the studio, you need to treat that place like it's your own personal Ipod, or Windows Media Player, or whatever you use to play music on your computer.

So I am writing this with the conviction that you guys around the 950 studio are reading this board. I don't want to hear lip, I don't want to hear excuses of "we are under staffed, low paid, etc." If you like radio, it shouldn't matter. I want everyone there to read this. I don't want to read any excuses on this board, and I want this posted on the walls of KJTV AM 950, because you are embarrassing those of us who worked hard to get that station on the air!

Oh, that everyone in the broadcasting industry shared that kind of conviction. Sadly, this is the exception rather than the norm.<P ID="signature">______________

I feel your PAIN! I am a huge fan of Glenn Beck...luckily he's on Premiere, so I have other ways of hearing his show....in it's entirity....with NO mis-cues or coverups from poorly programmed automation. The only cool thing about how screwed up it is on 950 is how you can hear Glenn and Stu talk back and forth during breaks in the "closed circuit" feed. And those dang Bryan Hughes promos that run over and over and over and over many times in the same break! UPDATE them already.

It's sad to see such a long time heritage frequency and powerful stick being abused that way.

Hey BVG,

You got it!

I'm glad I'm not the only bothered by this.
Maybe you and I should run that place.
Let's see, how much would Ray want for us to LMA 950? LOL ;)

Apparently NOTHING. Dave Walker tried to do that, but had no success...so he went and got 1420. I hear that some syndicators are trying to get off of 950.

Now, if I could only convince Ray or Brad to let me have a crack at it (yeah, right, LOL)

And KFYO would have much to gain from syndicators leaving, if it's the shows that I'm guessing they are?

Haven't heard 1420, anything good on that station yet?
(And speaking of my buddy Jeff Walker, shouldn't we finally be having traffic reports in Lubbock by now? Traffic's not what it used to be).

We tried the traffic reports back in the day when I was barely on the air (mostly voice tracking) at KONE. There are rarely any traffic issues in Lubbock that warrant doing traffic reports. A quick phone bit or just a jock update usually does the trick.

That was true, but not anymore. With the constant lane closures and road constrution on the West Loop 289, the Marsha Sharp Freeway construction, and constant parking woes at Texas Tech, radio stations in Lubbock should at least allocated a few minutes every half hour to address the traffic, even if nothing is going on. I sit in traffic often these days. Also, whenever there's a traffic accident, I find myself sitting in traffic, with no mention of it on the radio. Heck, Amarillo does it, and that's a smaller radio market than Lubbock. It's also another stream of revenue for which a station can sell: "This half hour traffic update a service of..." I see no reason why this can not be done in Lubbock, it is done EVERYWHERE else.

First off who are you garrett? And when I do have this station back to where it was 3 months ago are you going to write on here and tell me how well its going now. You are quick to bash, but will you be quick to compliment.

calm-o Patrick, calm-o.

Read my response above.
Don't take me too personal. I take radio VERY SERIOUSLY.
If I were a PD, I'd be tough. Around these parts, its the only way.

Read my response above.
Good job.
