Since WFHG-AM moved to the Sports Fox and now AM 640 is switching to an all sports format (The Sports Monster), I feel extremely vindicated. Why? Well, when I was still PD at WKPT-AM, I tried to convince the management on a few occasions to switch it to an all-sports station, since at the time, there was no station that did ALL SPORTS TALK. Lookie now! We are going to have two in the market. In the immortal words of Rush Hudson Limbaugh...SEE, I TOLD YOU SO! Sorry, I don't get to gloat much!

You're not the only one. About every radio sportscaster in the market made overtures to somebody at Holston to change to all sports. It made no sense with all the sports programming they had to surround the games with Frank Sinatra records then.

And actually, WKIN had been all sports long prior to The Sports Fox.

The difference with "The Monster" is that they will have actual local shows and legitimate network programming surrounding it. You'll be able to hear it at night in Johnson City.

The Sports Fox, by comparison, is going to waste.

This will be very interesting. Sean Hanitty will be on for three hours on WJCW. Does this mean he is leaving WFHG? One wonders why they were so in love with Neil Boortz and Bill O'Reilly they would shave an hour off the second most popular radio show in the country after Limbaugh.

Well, WKIN has been almost ALL sports, with the exception of the Morning Show with Tom Taylor and Brian Bishop. But yeah, KIN has been all sports for 20 hours a day during the week. The station's big problem has always been the fact that they drop power so low at night you can't pick it up 5 miles from the transmitter. During the day, I've got 1320 in Erwin before.
WKPT could've really had the edge in sports had we actually done it. Our numbers were always good with stuff like High School football. We often beat WJCW and WKIN on Friday nights...that's something I am very proud of, because Citadel's sports division is very good. Not only in ratings, but our sports programming is what made money. We always did well with high school football and UT football and Lady Vols Bball. But George just didn't want to drop music programming. I was shocked when he agreed to the oldies format.
WKPT could have done well with all sports, but it was just another example of their need to be super cautious.

I sure hope WGOC.COM works without any problems but I don't know what I'm going to listen to at night in the car now when I can't pick up WGOC!

Go to 650 out of Nashville.

Tight- I'm not trying to poo-poo you beating WJCW at night.

But how much of that was that you were broadcasting ONE game- and not jumping all over the place like WJCW does?

And how about when Science Hill was on WKPT you DIDN'T have Paul Overbay on?

Or Mike Musick, for that matter.

I don't buy "Super Cautious." WKPT had so many sports contracts that if I was a fan of Louis Armstrong and liked that music- I never knew if they'd be playing it or not.

It was simply a bone-headed move not to go all sports for them 15 to 20 years ago.

On to WKIN or WFHG-AM. These are sports stations, yes, but they are automated sports stations. So they don't really count.

And the FOX Sports Radio Network has such weak programming during the day that it is an embarassment to all of Bristol Broadcasting they don't have a local host to present just a different voice than Bill Meade to the market.

Actually, yes we did have Mike Musick. He was play-by-play guy on Tennessee High broadcasts. Is he the best play-by-play guy ever? No, but he did show improvement from when he was on WJCW. He is still there.
As far as I mean by being super cautious, all I am saying is that if they didn't have some guarantee of it making money, regardless of the quality, they wouldn't do it. For example, in 2002, we were approached by the Washington Redskins to become an affiliate. It was the same year Steve Spurrier became coach, so they wanted to get "The Ol' Ball Coach's" hometown on the network. They offered us media credentials to all home games (pre-season and regular and any potential playoff games), 2 season tickets, access to all team sponsored events (golf tourneys, banquets, etc) and team merchandise for giveaways. If a person wanted this stuff, they'd probably pay over 10-15 grand, if not more. The Skins wanted $250 per game rights fee. Widener balked at it, even though we had found people willing to sponsor the broadcasts. The team came down to $150 per game, for the entire KPT Network, with all of the afforementioned perks. David wouldn't go for it. Too much money. Dude, do you have any idea what they're gonna give us for $150. Hell, we could've sold the season tickets and made our money back!
So, wanting to get the NFL on WKPT, I went about contacting several teams (Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and a couple I can't remember). Heck, Carolina only wanted $25 per game. He still wouldn't go for it! My first choice would've been the Titans, but WGOC/Citadel had the rights and since they produced the games, they weren't going to drop WGOC. Understandable.
Finally, I thought about the Indianapolis Colts since they have the "Tennessee God" named Peyton Manning. I asked what their fee was and was told it was on a barter-only basis. David finally agreed since it wasn't going to need any money. If you looked at it from what we were getting, it wasn't nearly the deal Washington was going to give us. A few season tickets, with no playoff games. That's not bad, but like I said, we could've sold a pair of season tickets to the Redskins and made four grand.
As you see, it was just another example of how cautious they were when it came to taking a risk on making money. Yeah, we had a lot of sports on, but it was only because we could make money on it. I worked as PD from 2001-2006. The sales department, on one occasion, sold an informercial to Big Mama's Karaoke Cafe in Seymour which was nothing but 30 minutes of samples of people singing karaoke at the bar! Why'd they do it? $100 bucks a show. I swear to you that if someone came in with fifty bucks and said they wanted to buy airtime to broadcasting a farting contest, they would've put it on! I could give you other examples, but that, by and far, was the most blaring example of how they prostituted that station to the lowest bidder. So if you want to call stuff like that throwing caution to the wind, well, I guess you're right. But I guess what I am trying to say is that unless there was money up front or it was free, then we'd rather have a karaoke show than a program that might cost a little money, but had the potential to bring money in, either directly or by improving the quality of the station overall.
I was talking to another broadcaster today with whom I used to work, and we both agreed that when you put poor programming on a station for a quick buck, you're jeopardizing the overall product quality, which may lead to fewer advertisers on the station as a whole. Everything you do has ramifications, either for the good or for the bad. I'd rather turn down fifty bucks today if I thought it was going to possibly prevent us from making a thousand in six months. It's just another example of how Widener and upper management at Holston Valley only thinks from a tactical standpoint when they need to focus on strategic maneuvers, to quote another old friend. Sorry, but it's true.
But yes, Pratte, they should've gone all-sports many moons ago, but George simply did not want to give up his adult standards. Like I said earlier, I was shocked to the point of having a stroke that he agreed to the oldies format. Only problem is that it was simply trading one old, thread-bare format for another old, thread-bare format. All they did was move to the next parking space when they should've gone to a new parking lot. There's a reason why WKOS dropped oldies back in '05.
Sorry for the long reply. Thanks for sticking with me!

Oh, and one other thing...you talked about Musick and Overbay being bad, well, I can tell you there is one sports broadcaster in this market that makes EVERY OTHER SPORTSCASTER look like Joe Buck and Al Michaels. And the winner of that prestigious honour is........(opening the envelope).........SCOTT GRAY!!!! If he had a tenth of the talent to match his oversized ego, he would be the greatest SPORTS BROADCASTER in the history of American Sports, if not the entire world.
I have never seen one man take so much euphoric pleasure in hearing himself speak. When Scott would do his daily sports newscast on WKPT at 12:20, he would literally go longer than Duane Nelson's or Roger Epperson's entire news report. If Duane or Roger did ten minutes of news, Scott would go at least fifteen. There was one time he went 22 minutes! Twenty-Two agonizing, hair-curling minutes. One-Thousand-Three-Hundred-Twenty Seconds. Longer than Brian Williams' Nightly Newscast of important national and world news. Instead of just reading the news, he would take five minutes to tease what he was getting ready to tell you, when there was no commercial break that would necessitate doing a teaser. Then another 10 minutes of sports news AND then a preview of that evening's sports action on WKPT. And if he was talking about high school football on a Friday, well, you could count on that taking longer than the actual reading of the news, because he'd give you a synopsis of each game AND then the UT game on Saturday AND then the Colts game on Sunday AND then tell you about HIS SHOW, SPORTS MAGAZINE and VolCalls the following Monday.
Oh, and don't get me started about the actual game on which he was commentating. Once the game was over, he would do a forty minute postgame show. In comparison, assuming we weren't behind on spots, Don Spivey on DB, might do a 15, 20 minute, tops, postgame.
Paul Overbay might have his little catch-phrases. Mike Musick might stumble over his words from time-to-time. But no one in the history of broadcasting has ever come close to Scott Gray for mammoth ego, but cell-sized talent.
My only guess is that he is over-compensating for his feeling of inadequacy to Bill Meade. Oh, Dear Lord, he wants to be Bill so bad, you can smell it on him. Part of me feels a little bad for him cause he tries so hard to best Bill, but it just makes him look sad.

I think the Colts on Tri-Cities radio would have been a great idea if it was proposed a few years ago. Too bad no one hopped on that idea. Ever since the Titans went to the Super Bowl, they've been crap and most fans have flocked to the Colts. Many people, like myself, love them both! Just curious, but does anyone in Knoxville air Colts' games? But even though Colts' programming might still work now, the height of the success it could have brought has probably passed. Sure the Colts just won the Super Bowl but the Titans are about to evolve into a VERY good team again. People in Tennessee are about to hop on board the Titans' train again because Vince Young has already proved he's taking them back to the top. If the Titans' would have started him the whole year the Titans would have been in the playoffs. They only needed one more win, of course... they would have played the Colts in the first round.

It could be said that asking me to listen to Overbay or Gray do the Science Hill games is akin to asking me if I would like to drive a Vega or a Pinto.

However, yes, I would take Overbay.

Gray's play-by-play is so boring it can't even be described. I remember one time listening to WKPT and I literally couldn't hear Gray over Overbay screaming and getting excited in the background.

Why don't I just listen to Overbay then?

It is also known that Gray used to brag on being the "Top Rated PBP broadcaster in Tennessee by the AP."

What you don't know is that he doesn't let his other sportscasters enter. And he is up usually against four other broadcasters from the rest of the state.

How about "Sports Magazine" and giving phone numbers that don't work?

By the way, the personal stories I have on the guy make these light.

Tight- You give a great insight. And the only thing about Colts-Redskins I might say is the Colts fan base around here is rather fly-by-night. If Manning was traded, they'd root for that team and abandon the Colts.

The Redskins games were shown for years down here on WJHL until the Panthers and Titans came into existance.

And the Redskins WERE picked up by the soon-to-be extinct WKIN- I presume for the same deal they offered WKPT. So you could have had those tickets- the merchandise- all of that- and instead it went to a different station.

Tell your old boss that's not being cautious. That's being stupid.

Just like his format selection.

J...
We got the Colts back in 2002, so they've been on WKPT for five years now. The only real big problem with the deal is the fact that you are only guaranteed a wildcard and divisional game. The individual teams do not hold the rights to the conference championship game or the Super Bowl outside of the station that is the team's flagship, so only WFBQ in Indianapolis can carry Bob Lamey and Coach Marchibroda. Westwood One gets those rights and WJCW has had them, which I assume will be on 640 next season. One reason the Colts seemed like a good fit was exactly what was discussed earlier. A good deal of people were flocking to them, instead of the Titans.
But yeah, I admit it...I am a Redskins fan. Have been since I was seven, so those season tickets would've been nice, if only for the Dallas and Philly games. What can I say? I grew up in Virginia, and the Hokies were that good in the early 80's...not that I would ever pull for VA-Tech. And Virginia? I like the Wahoos, but they are pretty soft. So it was the Redskins...that, and WDBJ-TV in Roanoke showed nothing but Redskins games. That was before Carolina and Tennessee came into existence. Kind of miss those days, myself.

Mr. TWSP,

Have you heard about HVB's lastest loss of airstaff?

Dave Barnette is no longer with HVB.

[EDIT]

HVB has lost numerous air personalities in the past year.

[EDIT-harassing/stalking]

Yes, Mr D., I have heard about Dave Barnett not being at HVBC. I have heard a couple of different reasons why he's no longer there, but I don't know what happened for sure. And that's all I am going to say because Dave is one of my best friends...he is like a brother to me and I hate that whatever happened, happened. I've actually known about it for a couple of weeks now, but for some reason, some members of management at HVBC didn't want me to know and one that I considered a friend. Like I wasn't going to find out and like I was going to talk about it on radio-info or at Citadel. Dave is a close friend and I would never do that to him. The only reason I badmouth Tightwad Squarepants (Widener) is because of all that happened. Dave has always been good to me and was pretty much the only person that has made an effort to keep in touch with me. I hate this for Dave, but I know he'll bounce back, whatever he decides to do.

Amen on Dave bouncing back. I had the opportunity to work with him at 'TFM when he first came to HVBC. We all have our demons, he will get through this.
Side note: I went to high school with Mike Musick...can't think of another guy who is as smart or who has as much passion for what he does, minus the ego. I wish him continued success.
I am done with the name dropping for now.

You badmouth yourself? (Tightwad Squarepants)

[EDIT]

I will say this- trying to keep a friend's departure- for whatever reason- away from another person is typical HVBC.

When I use the name TightwadSquarepants in this way, I am talking about Nathan David Widener, Vice President/General Manager of Holston Valley Broadcasting's radio division...not myself. Dude, keep up! ;)

Uh...that would be your name on this site...maybe you should keep up!

Why is it that HVB cannot keep airstaff?

Consider the Management.

What real air experience does Widener have? None????

tk, I was just trying to be funny, not a jerkwad. I hoped that the smiley face would indicate that. Only reason I said that is because in a post a while back, I told the story of how I came up with my screen name. Sorry that you took it the wrong way, dude. My apologies.

And mr d, you are right about the airstaff thing, to a point. David really has no experience, but historically speaking, HVBC doesn't have a great deal of turnover for this industry. Steve Mann has been there for 10 years, Taylor for about 4, Elva has been there since about 1981. On WRZK, Scott has been there for as long as I was, about 1991. And the Winnster is going on four years.

The last 12 months or so have been really wild. DeFranzo left. I got fired. Nicole just stopped showing up. And Dave is no longer there. That's a big change from how it's been for the last 10-12 years. Prior to that, the only two people I can think of that have been fired were Dennis Kelly, back in 1996 and Mike Riddle in 2003...oh, and Mark McKinney left for NextMedia in Myrtle Beach back in 2004.

I think one big reason for the stability up until this year has not been because people are happy there. It's because Widener convinces his staff, both airstaff and support staff, that they can't do any better than Holston Valley and that they're lucky to even have a job in radio. I was telling a former colleague and friend of mine a couple of weeks that Widener treats his employees like an abusive husband treats his wife, at least a husband who mentally and emotionally abuse his spouse. I really think that. I know I felt that way and I know others do, too. That's the only reason a lot of those people have stayed there as long as they have. It sure as heck isn't for the generous salaries and working conditions!
Plus, David likes to let people hang themself. For example, Take 5 or 10 minutes extra for lunch, oh my God, you're name goes in David's little book of misdeeds and errors, although you never know it because he rarely will ever tell you that you're doing wrong until you've already hung yourself. He'll wait til you've done a couple dozen things wrong over a couple years and you're in trouble. Forget the fact that you work 50 hours a week for little to no overtime and one night you leave 15 minutes early. Or get this. Back in 95, I was having a difficult time with a phone feed for a ball game. We kept getting cut or something like that. I am a perfectionist and get frustrated if things meltdown to the point I can't do anything like that. I barely kicked the wall (really) and my foot went right through the drywall. I didn't wait. I called David to let him know I did it and offered to pay for it and/or fix it, which I did assist in doing on my off-time. Thinking my penance was paid and things were forgotten, I went on. I tell you, there was not a year since that David didn't mention that little nugget. Sorry. I was 19 years old at the time and a little hot-headed. I still have a bit of a temper, but I never take it out on someone, either verbally or physically, yet somehow, I am a raving lunatic that people fear. I would hit myself before I would another person, but David can make people feel like their largest weakness is 100 times greater than it is. The only times I get frustrated at work are when I feel like I am being hindered by something or someone that keeps me from doing the best I can, but Widener made me feel like I could go postal at any time.
And on a somewhat unrelated note, Tightwad would also make you feel like the most insignificant human in the world. Most times he would introduce me to someone, he would tell the story of when I first started as an intern and my mom told him to take good care of her baby boy. Yeah, that's a good way to let the person know that I am capable by making me out to be some green rookie that hasn't even rode gain on the Sunday morning "God Squad."
