I finally got a shortwave radio

I also bought a G8 about 2 months ago, & I love it. It has so many useful features for it's size & price.

There are also still a few radio programs devoted to DXing.

Mainly religious SW broadcaster WWCR out of Nashville, TN also has a block of programs about DXing (of which "World of Radio" is one) on Saturday nights (EST) from 9:45 to midnight (also EST) on 4840.

Does anyone know what I should be hearing on 7270 khz at 730 pm here in Tampa?

I don't know what the language is but that's one of the frequencies listed for Egypt.

It has a pretty good signal.

Cairo perhaps?

I suggest you visit the Ontario DX Association web site. They have very accurate and up to date shortwave stations lists in .pdf format.

Back in the late 1950;s, I cut my DXing teeth on the shortwave bands. I don't do much shortwave listening these days, but I still like to listen to Radio Australia and New Zealand when I get a chance.

I don't know why I didn't get a shortwave radio sooner.

It's been decades since I've heard shortwave.

It's kind of like taking a brief tour of different countries.

One I think I've confirmed so far tonight is 7440 from the Ukraine.
 
I used to love shortwave radio. Especially The Voice of America and the BBC. But now, you can't get that ANYWHERE. The transmitters have been sold to Jesuscasters. The sad reality is a lot of the English broadcasts I receive today are from those things. There used to be so much variety and every hour, something new to discover for endless nights of fun.

Now I get WWV/WWVH, CRI, Radio Australia, Radio Havana, Radio New Zealand, Radio Canada International and Radio Taiwan mostly. I have picked up Radio Myanmar, Lao National Radio and I think Cambodia on occasion. but that's it. I also live in an area with a lot of electrical interference....

Yeah, that's one of the first things I noticed that I didn't remember hearing back in the 70s the last time I listened to shortwave. :-\

Still, I appreciate what I'm able to get from distant parts of the world.

It gets a little frustrating not being able to ID some of these stations, even using the different sites I've been given here.


Oh, and I was wondering if anyone knows any good regular SW frequencies that are heard in the US during the day.

WWV is the only one I've heard so far but I'd think there would have to be some more.

Does your PUD up there have remote metering like ours down here has? Since Clark PUD installed new metres about 8 years ago, shortwave (and to some extent, mediumwave) has mostly become nothing but a very loud, wideband, constant buzzing noise when listening within 10' of a power line. So, this pretty much negates trying to DX in a building.......

I have to go out to the big grassy field nearby my apartment if I am to have any hope of receiving anything intellegible on shortwave!

Isn't that what BPL (broadband over power lines) sounded like during the trials of that service? I seem to recall that was mostly shot down by shortwave enthusiasts and amateur radio interests, but it seems like power line "buzzsaw" interference has been on the rise in communities lately.

I believe so. It's gotten such that not even WWV can overpower the noise. (Not even the mighty WWVB! My folks' neighbour has two atomic clocks in her house and she has to set them by hand because the noise even overpowers the 60kHz signal. Almost blew out the front end of my DX-302 trying to tune it in! ;o)

Of course, all the poorly shielded unfiltered switching computer power supplies, ballasted fluorescent light bulbs and LED traffic lights in use around this area doesn't much help the skywave noise pollution problem either!
 
Used to be some cool stuff on shortwave when I used to listen. You had WRNO worldwide in New Orleans that played rock. There was briefly as station called Radio Mervin or something like that playing rock also. Of course the BBC came in good at night, an I used to sometimes listen to Moscow from their old cuban transmitter that sounded like it was broke down but still had a killer signal. that one disappeared not long after Gorbachev left office. But in recent years since the popularity of the internet, there just isn't much to hear on shortwave except preachers. And not very good ones at that. some of them sound like they might be a little crazy. And you've still got all the conspiracy theory, militia types, colon blow and various other crackpots.

Sad thing is, the County Park where I used to go has a curfew at dark! They think there is no reason for someone to be outside at night. Hard to do much DXing in the daytime.

Our apartments have nothing but noise across the band. Plasma TVs suck! LCD's ain't much better. :p

Same thing here at my apartments, especially on weekend afternoons and evenings. The non-DXers turn on their plasma and LCD TVs and there is noise heard accross the AM band.
 
I commented about Plasma TV noise on the "Broadcasting and Cable" magazine article yesterday, where they were touting Plasma TVs as "the best thing for 3D viewing" since instant grits.

Did anybody catch the finale of Radio Sweden over the weekend? They were supposed to be ending all their SW and MW broadcasts.
