I finally met someone who listens to WBAI

Last week I got a ride from someone who was listening to WBAI 99.5. Despite its full market signal, it is rated much lower than little class A stations that can't even be heard in New York City itself. 101.7 The Beach gets about the same cume and it can't be heard at all west of Patchogue. I didn't think anyone listened to that station. The few times I have listened to it was when it interfered with WJBR. It should be on AM or HD3 or 87.7, its few supporters will still listen, and even a Classic Chinese Hits format would do much better than WBAI on 99.5. The FM will be worth over $100 million. I hope donations will dry up in this recession so that it is forced off the FM band.

I also listen to WBAI, and there are about twenty other stations I'd get rid of before 99.5.

You mean to tell me that you, one of the biggest Pulse cheerleaders on our forum, would rather have WBAI's format on 87.7 replacing the current dance format?

I'd rather hear these non-coms than tuning into 3 different stations hearing the same song any day. The DJ's are volunteers & have the most creativity than any standard commercial radio personalities. The world will be a better place if these kinds of stations overtake CC, CBS, Cox, etc. Sure, a few DJ's aren't really good, but the ones who are truly make it INTERESTING.

I myself volunteer on a College radio station. It is the best alternative to commercial aside from NPR. I wish the station I was on covered more area.

We really should support these non-commercial stations. It's the closest we have left to actually being LOCAL. I remember listening to a few non-coms in NYC while I was visiting in the early-90's. It was NICE.

I, for one, do listen to WBAI. And I'm not even listening in New York City. I listen to 'BAI on-line. I listen to Max Schmid's "Mass Backwards", featuring the original Jean Shepherd shows, originally broadcast on WOR-AM and FM. Like one poster said "there are about twenty other stations I'd get rid of before 99.5". I fully concur. While most commercial stations (and some so-called "public" stations) are trying for most profitable solution to make bucks, 'BAI (in spite of it's eccentricities over the years.... are there are many) still provides a much needed place to vent and to be a different voice in a city of 8 million souls. Some people consider the 99.5 frequency to be a "valuable piece of real estate". Frankly, there are several other stations that really have no programming of value except for those whose program for the bottom line. That said, listen to those stations if you so desire.

But simply put, leave 'BAI alone.

Nick,

From a fellow Pulse "cheerleader", I do understand why 99.5 would be a perfect frequency. However, there is one show on 'BAI that I DO listen to..."Liquid Sound Lounge" with Jeannie Hopper.

It relates to another thread in here about having "soulful" house appear on the radio. Jeannie's been at it for over 15 years now and to the club community, is a legend. There may be issues from within Pacifica, but for a show like hers, it is a keeper :)

Despite its admittedly negligible audience, 'BAI is still a heritage station in this market, and it would, in my opinion, amount to a travesty to replace its programming with Pulse's, or any other commercial, format (but especially Pulse's! ;D.).
