I find it very odd that a town the size of los angeles only has one all xmas station

My hometown which is Louisville ky market number 54 has 3 stations playing all Christmas. And los angeles only has one???

WTF is that all about??

Most cities have 2 stations playing all Christmas. I guess the wave wasn't feeling very festive this year or they have gotten burned the past two years going ho ho ho and not makin the dough dough dough lol

I remember back in 2000 when sal had his standard station on the a.m. and he flipped to all Christmas music playing the crooner all Christmas music. It was very cool and different for an all Christmas music radio station.

Opinions

KOST has begun playing Christmas music every November since 2001, when program director Jhani Kaye wanted to give the listeners some "tidings of comfort and joy" to counteract the grief and shock that resulted from the September 11 terrorist attacks. In 2011, Jhani Kaye was programming KTWV and he switched the station to Christmas music on November 13, beating KOST by two days. KTWV promoted itself as "L.A.'s New Christmas Station." For the December 8-January 4 ratings period, KOST was ranked #1 with an 8.5% audience share. KFI was second, followed by KPWR, KAMP, KIIS, KLVE...and then KTWV. Part of the reason that Louisville has more Christmas stations than Los Angeles could be because Louisville doesn't have the high percentage of Latinos/Hispanics that L.A. does. By the way, is one of those three Christmas stations a country Christmas station? I know how those Kentuckians love Buck Owens' Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy. :)

#1: It's too dang early to play 24/7 Christmas music anyways....wait til Black Friday at least. Hearing "Silent Night" on Thanksgiving Day, just does not go well. I usually reserve that song for the stroke of midnight, Christmas Eve!

#2: Some stations will eventually switch over, the closer it gets to Christmas, such as KRTH. The Dallas oldies station has already done so. http://kluv.cbslocal.com/

And many stations will just have 24 hours of Christmas music......3pm Christmas Eve, to 3pm Christmas Day type programming.

Many retail stores are already playing seasonal / Christmas music already, so plenty of us are already getting exposed to this, thanks to Muzak and other satellite services.

The 3 stations in Louisville playing all Christmas are a soft rock station which plays nickelback how that is soft rock is beyond me. Then the other is a variety hits stations gen x radio. And the last one is a very soft rock station playing all Christmas. They play billy joel barabara Streisand Elton john but no country station has ever gone all Christmas in Louisville.

KOLA in Riverside usually goes Christmas but I'm not sure whats going on since Jesse Duran is the new PD. I think KFSH does too. Maybe I'm wrong.

KTWV is going through some musical changes so Rick might flip the switch after Thanksgiving or just mix in Holiday hits. I heard a few on KTWV this morning.

I don't know if KOST ever did Christmas music before 2001, but I remember in the late 80s it was KJOI 99 (98.7FM) that would go all Christmas, as my dad would make a big deal and play it in the house during the holidays.

For LA proper, the only stations doing Xmas music recently have been KOST and KRTH. KRTH in the Jhani Kaye years did 3 tunes per hour, while of course KOST is 24/7. I think for LA, with so many different cultures, many of which don't "do" Christmas, it makes sense. New York's CBS-FM tried to join the party a few years back and go 24/7 with Xmas, and it failed.

Will be interesting to see what the new guy does at KRTH. He is already starting before Thanksgiving, which Kaye never did at KRTH. He's also doing more crass promotions like "Karaoke Kristmas Kash." Though it kind of fits with the new KRTH image, which is slick 80s vs. classic good time oldies.

Also wonder if he'll use Kaye's playlist. It was very obvious Kaye brought over a lot of his tried and true KOST Xmas tunes.

One thing that has always been done pretty well by KRTH is the 7 or 8 hour loop they play from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. Good mix of tunes that stretch back a bit more.

But please, no more "God Song." And more Augie Rios.
