"Yesterday's Hits, Today". Lately 104 sounds like TOP 40 circa, 1999. Even when new stuff is played, it's only a select handful... Then again I think 104's heyday is back when they had the New Music Zone w/ Ryan Chase.
I still have a couple of those promo CDs..

Just out of curiosity, is it true that when you say 6400 music everyone in Houston knows what I'm talking about? From what I've read, back around 1988 then-rival 93 Q broadcasted live from Club 6400 on the weekends. It had a huge impact on the market. I guess that's one of the reasons why Modern Rock crossovers did so well on Houston CHRs in the late 80s, as well as throughout the 90s.

As for KRBE's current sound, yeah it's almost Hot A/C sounding till 5 PM these days (thanks to consultant Jan Jaffries), but ratings and cume-wise the station is on fire!

It's hard to lose when you're just playing bona fide hits. I'd rather have a station that doesn't take a lot of musical risks and has huge ratings than one that takes a lot of risks and doesn't.

Easy scapegoat for the pundits.

I'm not sure about everyone, but I would bet that would be true for most Houstonians in their 30s and 40s.
That all happened right before my time, so I never heard the 93Q broadcasts, but I do remember them being very popular.

Of course they're on fire. The station is billing itself as "hit", and there's no competition! If you throw a station like KISS/Dallas into Houston, KRBE would become "A Cume-less Media Station."

I'm not so sure about that. Last I checked, KISS Dallas was on the way down and KRBE was on the way up ratings wise. With Cheap Channel gutting the staff at KHKS and using imported VT talent, what's that going to do to them?

Personally, I like KRBE's approach. I find it a lot more listenable than a lot of mainstream CHRs, probably because I'm not big on thug rap. I do like hip-hop that is more melodic like T-Pain or Baby Bash. A mainstream CHR is never going to out Soulja Boy a rhythmic or urban, so why try? On a mainstream CHR I think you alienate as many listeners as you impress by playing that stuff.

I think one of the keys to KRBE's success is that it rather unapologetically super serves its core demo - caucasian females in their 20s.

Playing to the teens like KHKS does is a lot of fun, but does it make enough money? Their recent staff cuts tell me it doesn't.

That's the "World Famous" station for you.

I actually enjoyed this surge of late 90's/ early 2000's hits, actually find this positive.

As do I. For a while there it was hard to tell whether I was listening to 104.1 or 104.9. I expected Cumulus to reduce KRBE to rubble, however, I've been somewhat pleasantly surprised at their current rotation.

They could bring back Erasure, The Cure, & Depeche Mode to 104...
I agree Troy but those artists dont really have any new hits out anymore. When I moved to Houston back around 1994, KRBE was awesome! Today, sadly it sounds like the Box or 104.9 . Music really has changed.

I think KRBE is a jekyl and hyde station. During the day, It sounds like Mix 96.5-But at Nights & Weekends, It does sound more like 97.9-Tha Boxx. Oh, one more thing-104 no longer plays music by Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Erasure. Those artists have simply drifted off the radar. Those songs by them were so very popular over a decade ago. At one point, 104 played "Bubbly" by Colbie Callait, and then it played Soulja Boy's "Superman" song. THIS is definitely NOT for KIDS

On the contrary, sir. Kids make up 99% of my requests for Soulja Boy.
