I Got CFAC 960 Calgary in Pennsylvania!

At 1:54 AM this morning I received CFAC out of Calgary. The signal was about average in strength. CFAC aired a commercial about a hockey game between the Calgary Flames and the Columbus Blue Jackets and I heard mentions of "960 The Fan." and "Calgary Flames Radio." Then they went into ESPN Radio programming.

I had the station for a few minutes before it faded and the 960 in Salisbury, MD took over. A few minutes later CFAC came back, but weaker and mixed with WTGM, WFIR and Radio Reloj. CFAC was a 1,941 mile catch!

That's an excellent catch - congrats!! I have yet to catch CFAC here in Chicagoland; some music station seems to come in better (a station which I have yet to ID).

Nice catch. That's a busy frequency, with a lot of stuff going on in the background for me here...

So far, I've IDed Roanoke's WFIR and Radio Reloj on the band, but it's sure crowded!

It's good to know CFAC is still doable in these parts. I am a bit east of you, but a good while back I locked into them loud and clear one morning for a solid half hour at about 0300 or 0400 hours. They were running a Top 40 or Country format at the time (or a mix of both). They were indeed rare for me in that NYC favors southerly signals; not signals from the west. This was before the time of all the household electronic gizmos radiating electromagnetic fields, plus there were fewer stations on the frequency, especially at that hour. But CHNS used to be around the northeast radio dial; now they have gone black forever, at least on AM-so that frees the frequency a little.

Wow nice catch!

I'm happy for you.

It's an experience that, unfortunately, only those of us here or others like us can relate to. Before I discovered the internet and forums like this, I thought I was so alone in being interested in something like this and getting a distant station I've never heard before.

It goes to show how you could easily pick up KSL on the right nights if only it weren't for closer stations.

Keep up that good DXing!

I *think* I heard CFAC here in Michigan earlier this year. I heard what sounded like a hockey game. The CFAC webstream also had a hockey game, but the over-the-air signal was too weak to positively ID anything that was going on besides official whistles and the sort.

Guess I need to try again!

Congrats!

I've heard that one here in Nashville a couple of times. It looks like they occasionally forget to do the sunset pattern change -- but even on day facilities that shouldn't be making it that far east, especially on a crowded channel like 960! (no, I'm not implying their day pattern is out of whack)

Guess I need to try again!

I tried again and this time I was successful! At 1:00 AM, I heard a weak, but steady signal on 960 with ESPN programming. I knew CFAC carried ESPN at night so I stuck around and was rewarded with a positive ID complete with the call letters, website and ownership mention and a Calgary mention!

CFAC is 1,496 miles from my location in Coldwater, MI. Not my longest catch, but definitely in the top 5. They are my first ever Alberta station and my farthest west station at nearly 114 degrees longitude.

Everybody is right about 960 being crowded. This is actually my 12th log on the frequency!

Now to try for KSL and CHRB!

I've heard CFAC here in the NW burbs of Chicago- but WFIR Roanoke makes it here more often. Also have heard WTCH Shawano, WI!

Like what my sister says a lot-

SWEET!!

I've gotten CFAC here in Bothell about don't know how many times over the past year. Now, I usually get KALE Richland, WA or KLAD Klamath Falls, OR.

I guess CFAC reaches from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts. I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and I can receive CFAC 960 here too, even though there's a local 960 less than 25 miles away. On some good nights, in certain spots, CFAC will completely override the local 960 (KKGN).

I was thinking how Sweetjumper's post got me wondering about what possible Canadian stations I may be able to get down here in Florida.

I used to listen for stations from Canada when I lived up north but never here.

I'll have to see what I can get.

Try CJBC 860 out of Toronto. They're a French-language station that plays music sometimes. Maybe 1610 CJWI Montreal, a French talk station. They might make it to Florida.
