I have a question for a P1

Since I have started listening to The Hardline faithfully this is the first time they have gone on vacation (starting tomorrow through next week). My question is do they have someone fill in or do they run "best of"? ???

They never run Best of's during the main dayparts. They will have BaDD Radio go to 3-7 or have Dick Hicks/John Radighan. In the past Ben & Skin would fill in.

I just called a buddy who works there-

Norm Am drive,
"Quack and Black" (Rich Phillips and Donovan Lewis) 10-Noon
Rhadigan and Followwell (sp?) 12-3
and Bad radio PM drive.

And Chris house has quit. That's the other news from the Mothership, they're looking for a new Top 10 host...

I have a silly question. Since I don't listen to the Ticket except during Stars games, I have no idea what a P1 is. So, What is it? Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Apparently Chris is leaving the industry for law enforcement and they are looking for a replacement...

General term...a P1 listener to a particular station is a person who listens to that station the majority of the time when they chose to listen to the radio (i.e. the station they listen to the most). P2 is someone who listens to that station as a second station (they primarily listen to another station more then this station).

It's not a Ticket term, they've just popularized an arbitron term. It basically stands for preference- a p=1 is someone who prefers that station, p-2 is someone who says KXXX is a 2nd preference, P-3 a 3rd preference. Shorthand for identifying hardcore listeners, occasional listeners, and infrequent listeners.

And to put it into real world terms- The Fan has just as many actual listeners (cume) as the Ticket. But the Ticket has MUCH higher TSL (time spent listening). Therefore they get much, MUCH higher ratings. They have more p-1's. More people who prefer them, and therefore listen for a longer period of time, giving them higher ratings. The Fan has more p-2's and p-3's. Plenty of people listen to them, but prefer The Ticket, or ESPN or whoever else as their primary station.

top 10 host

That is good news that Chris House quit. He was beyond terrible. He wasted lots of time on the air trying to do schtick between segments. Just play the bits!!! He was trying to be a personailty when he has none. Maybe they can hire someone wha can just count to ten and then shut up. Also, the board op who runs the replay overnight is awful. He/she plays music beds so loud over the voice tracks you can't hear what the annoucer is saying anyway. As usual, no one cares about overnights and weekends.

Agreed on Chris House. I couldn't listen to the Top 10 because of his comments between segments.
The Ticket is better than the Top 10. It's such a give up at 7:00

Thanks to txchipk and little1 for answering my question. I'm not in the radio industry, but I do listen quite a bit since I am in my delivery van several hours a day.

A slight clarification in the PPM world is needed. A P1 simply listens to a particular station more than their second choice, and the P2 is listend to more than the third choice and on down to P6, P7, P8. The average metered person is exposed to 7 or 8 stations every two week period, so distinguishing between heavy and light usage is significant.

In the real world, there are P1s who listen to that station a lot more than any other, but there are also those who listen a tiny bit more to one of two or three stations over a time period... a few weeks or months. This listening is often cyclical, with next month's P1 being last month's P3. We saw heavy P2 and P3's in the diary, too, but in the diary we had new respondents every week and did not see the ebb and flow of P1 to P2 to P3 and back. In other words, there is far less long term loyalty than thought, and change is often very subconscious... mood or situation driven, in other words.

But isnt the ticket 90 percent schtick ?

Maybe Chris had aspirations of doing something more than just the top 10 like ben n skin wanted to be more than just 2nd stringers. Can't fault a guy for that.

Like Ty Walker trying to be funny. :D

When there isn't much worthwhile sports news to be had, yes.

When there is actual sports, no.

Take yesterday- the fill-in crew for the Hardline dumped e-news and actually got the Old Grey Wolf to call in during his vacation to cover a real sports story.

This is the real genius of the Ticket- they know what sports stories most of their listeners really care about and they know how long of an attention span we have depending on how important the story is. They will get someone knowledgeable about the subject on air ASAP, discuss for a while, and maybe let just a few P1s chime in. And unless the topic is really earth-shattering, they will move on for a few segments at least until the listener base has turned over.

ESPN103.3 will make mountains out of local sports molehills- either by having a syndicated show drone on about something which local listeners don't care that much about or by having a local host who compares every subject to whichever sport they feel most comfortable with. (Always a football analogy in every story on GAC, always a basketball analogy in every Ben and Skin story.)

The Fan, on the other hand, is typically on the right topics, but most of the hosts haven't been in this market long enough to "get it" yet. Plus, of course, the station is committed to beating every horse dead with a barrage of brain-dead callers and lame text messages which will stretch on endlessly until listeners will bail out or consider a lobotomy. I swear the only people who can leave their dial on 105.3 for more than 20 minutes are those with their phone in their hands while on hold hoping desperately for their chance to play Kige Ramsey during their 15 seconds of fame. (Hats off to you boys. Boom goes the dynamite.)

Missed Rhynes yesterday since I was working.

Somehow I was able to get the little ticket on my mp3/fm player in the office today but switched to the FAIL when those boys decided to talk hockey.

KIGE :D

That is the BEST way to describe the FAILS format

This is KIGE for youtube radio fore-arm  :D
