But isnt the ticket 90 percent schtick ?
When there isn't much worthwhile sports news to be had, yes.
When there is actual sports, no.
Take yesterday- the fill-in crew for the Hardline dumped e-news and actually got the Old Grey Wolf to call in during his vacation to cover a real sports story.
This is the real genius of the Ticket- they know what sports stories most of their listeners really care about and they know how long of an attention span we have depending on how important the story is. They will get someone knowledgeable about the subject on air ASAP, discuss for a while, and maybe let just a few P1s chime in. And unless the topic is really earth-shattering, they will move on for a few segments at least until the listener base has turned over.
ESPN103.3 will make mountains out of local sports molehills- either by having a syndicated show drone on about something which local listeners don't care that much about or by having a local host who compares every subject to whichever sport they feel most comfortable with. (Always a football analogy in every story on GAC, always a basketball analogy in every Ben and Skin story.)
The Fan, on the other hand, is typically on the right topics, but most of the hosts haven't been in this market long enough to "get it" yet. Plus, of course, the station is committed to beating every horse dead with a barrage of brain-dead callers and lame text messages which will stretch on endlessly until listeners will bail out or consider a lobotomy. I swear the only people who can leave their dial on 105.3 for more than 20 minutes are those with their phone in their hands while on hold hoping desperately for their chance to play Kige Ramsey during their 15 seconds of fame. (Hats off to you boys. Boom goes the dynamite.)
