Well, they usually seize the equip, and the CAN put you in jail, but I don't know if anyone has ever served time.

I ran a somewhat sucessful 100watt FM pirate in rural Arkansas for over 2 years. That's most likely why we did not get caught... no one cared or noticed out in the middle of nowhere :) Thankfully, there were 2 NCAA Divison II colleges in town, that's how we were sucessful :) Everyone involved with the station was trained on what to do if the FCC ever came knockin'.... basically PLAY DUMB! Don't give them ANY info, period! Sure as hell do not let them inside or give then any names. They will most likely try to intimidate the offender on the 1st visit. Had they ever paid us a visit, we would have taken the visit serious and pulled the plug for good.

Other things... get decent equiptment and setup properly. We had SWR meters and whatnot to make sure we were "tuned" properly. Everything was top-notch so we did not "bleed" or interfere with other stations nearby on the dial. Having a station that causes any kind of interference can get you in trouble quick!

Keep the music and the on-air DJ's mouths clean. Profanity is another way of getting negative vibes from the people of the community.

Pick a spot on the low end of the dial if possible, below 92.1 FM. That's where non-commerical stations reside.

Try to sound somewhat legit. Make station ID's and sweepers. I swear you could not tell us apart from a legal station when we were on-the-air :) good times indeed!

If you are in a heavly populated area, good luck. I'm sure you'll be discovered in no time so you'll want to be very careful. That's the main reason we have not come back on-the-air ;)

Re: I have a Question

Allow me to refer you to CW's post on the Houston Radio board concerning pirate broadcasting. You will learn some very important information concerning this subject.

Lethal injection in this state.

Electric chair, gassing, shooting (your option in Utah), hanging, etc. in others.

No breaks.

They will break you. Take your equipment. Tell your folks.

Bound, gagged, driven to Longview, put on a short chain, and forced to listen to KYKX.

OH, NO! NOT THAT!! Just being driven to Longview would be punishment enough!

(Then again, there's always Streakers'...hi, girls!)
